Loads of great steam action to enjoy in this fine show. These engines do not run very often, and rarely photographed like they are on a private photo charter.
We begin with a May 2011 private photo charter on the famous Grand Canyon Railway which operates from Williams to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. There are daily tourist trains, which are primarily diesel powered, with steam generally only running once a month or so. But on this weekend we have former Burlington Route 2-8-2 #4960 for two days of photo charters. The first day is a mixed freight train with numerous exciting runbys. The second day features a passenger train consist, with more nice runbys for the charter participants. Besides making smoke for still photos the exhaust sounds are good and sharp for sound on the videos.
A February 2017 charter weekend features 2-8-0 #29, as well as 4960, mostly doubleheading a passenger consist, with some great runbys. We’ll meet the regular diesel tourist trains each day, and on the last day its powered by former MLW FPA-4 just so the photographers would get a bonus rare diesel for one scene. On one day there are cowboys with the train in the background as well. The line has high desert scenery as well as the Coconino Canyon with its rocky gorge and lush stands of trees.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy 4960 is the main star of this Modern Western Steam show as it participates on various specials that were organized by Peter Lerro Productions & was captured by Ron Burkhard.
Here’s the timeline:
Saturday May 14, 2011-4960 is facing south on a freight train which consists of 3 tank cars, 5 hoppers, 1 empty flatbed, 1 coach, & a Red Santa Fe Caboose number 999727.
The Following Sunday May 15, 2011-4960 handles a passenger train that consists of only 6 coaches.
And Finally on Wednesday February 8 & Thursday the 9th 2017, 4960 doubleheads with number 29 in the winter. Before that happens, stills from the Tuesday the 7th trip with only 29 are shown. Fun fact, Jim Parfrey of steam train videos, & Les Jarrett from Railway Productions were also on the same event as well. Later on, a short ride through Coconino Canyon was included as well as a meet with CN/Via rail/Potomac Eagle FPA4 number 6793 on the return trip.
Locations include Milepost 11.5, & 26.8, the low bridge at MP 35, Willaha siding, Miller’s wash bridge at MP 36.1, Queuerro Road, MP 18 (reference to an LS&I 2-8-0 that used to operate on this line from 1989-2005/6), MP 36.2, Coconino Canyon with the bridge at MP 55.2, Road X at MP 61.5, the low wooden trestle at MP 56.5, 56.1, & 55.1 plus Imbleau siding.
Overall, Chris Kovacs did a decent job narrating this program.
