Gotthard Main Line through the Swiss Alps: South Ramp

This program looks at the Gotthard Main Line through the Swiss alps in 2015. With the opening of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel expected in the second half of 2016 this iconic rail route will see the amount of trains that travel over it drastically reduced – a mere trickle of what is currently on offer. Whilst the northern ramp south of Erstfeld is more commonly visited by enthusiasts and observers, the southern part of the line north of Biasca is often overlooked. We take our cameras to this picturesque section of the line in September 2015 to capture the everyday action before it changes for good. The program is divided into four sections including night scenes taken at Biasca, which will also be by-passed when a new avoiding line opens later in 2016. Motive power is of the Swiss classic designs of 460, Re4/4 and Re6/6 locomotives. We also see class 524 multiple units, class 610 and 470 Pendolino trainsets, Intercity class 500 multiple units as well as class 485, 486, 186, 187 and BLS Re425. This program will be an historic record of this most famous of alpine crossings as it will always be remembered – with constant passenger and freight train activity travelling through some of the most stunning scenery in Europe.
