Filmed as Frisco 1522 made its way to the 1994 NRHS convention in Atlanta. 1522 is now retired and a static display in St. Louis. This program also features Norfolk & Western 611 in an exciting doubleheader with Frisco 1522 from Birmingham into Atlanta. 611 is also retired, so this trip will never be replicated. See the whole thing here! The 1522 was noted for its very loud exhaust bark and lovely steamboat whistle and you’ll get to hear it all as this 4-8-2 runs the flat lands at speed and chugs up challenging mountain grades.

This DVD of the legendary 1994 NRHS Convention EXTRAVAGANZA is one you will want to watch over and over again… Just Like Pentrex’s two video productions covering the event… You will see a different “vantage point”/perspective of N&W #611 and Frisco #1522’s doubleheader trip from Birmingham to Atlanta… as well as a different view of 1522’s storied journey all the way from her home in St. Louis, Missouri. Valhalla Video Productions is another SUPERB production company which put together some unforgettable material in this DVD. Be sure to also check out their film “611: The Final Excursion” as well! 🙂

While Frisco 1522 pulled the 1994 peach blossom special to Atlanta, Georgia, this NRHS Convention was the last hurrah before the Norfolk Southern closed down their steam operations 5 months later. The doubleheader of the 1522 & the N&W 611 however was well worth the effort.

Steam engines are an interesting piece of equipment to see in operation. For myself, seeing a steam train working is fascinating. In today’s world, most cars are not set up to be compatible with steam engines for heat and lighting, making it necessary to add a diesel, or equivalent for excursion runs. Seeing an “A-unit” diesel behind a steam engine gives the impression that the steam engine is not actually working. Steam engines were built to work, and it’s great to see their power being demonstrated. In this video, that is exactly what we see. Big steam engines showing their power without a clearly visible diesel assist. It is great as we watch a 4-8-2 working the way it was designed for. This is truly one of the finest Steam Train videos made and is a “must have” for all rail fans.

While this program marks as a prequel to the 1994 NRHS convention, this was one of 1522’s most common one way events of the ’90s. Well despite that pentrex was at the event too.
