Coal is king in Appalachia! The region’s railroads toil with great determination to haul the “black diamonds” out of the hills. Pentrex visits some of the most inaccessible country east of the Mississippi to share with you the rugged beauty and majesty of this unique landscape. Witness seemingly unending parades of coal trains on CSX’s Louisville & Nashville and Chesapeake & Ohio lines, as well as Norfolk Southern rails into eastern Kentucky. The coal fields have traditionally been the final scene of action for aging locomotives. The venerable U30Cs of CSX seen here are on the verge of retirement. You’ll be surprised to find Santa Fe in Kentucky as leased General Electric C30-7s, some still in their “Kodachrome” paint schemes, work the coal fields in droves!
Two trains meet and are photographed through the obstacle at the only mainline switchback in the United States, Hagan’s Switchback. Beautiful color graphics explain how trains negotiate the complex trackwork at this locale. Tunnels, high trestles and helpers on heavy coal trains add to the interest on this fascinating visit to the coal fields of eastern Kentucky.

Made in 1991, there are a variety of diesels in the Bluegrass State which was shot before the Wide Cab units, as well as some trains that still have cabooses on freights before they were replaced by the Flashing Rear End Devices.
Besides CSX, there are other Road Names like Santa Fe, Seaboard, the Golden Oak Mine Railway with NW2s, Norfolk Southern, Winnifred Railroad with an SW1500, General Motors with a former N&W high hood unit, Chessie System, Atlantic Coast Line, Southern, & Louisville & Nashville.
Locations include Vicco, Hazard, Jeff, Golden Oak Mine at Sapphire, Coleman, Williamson West Virginia with a roundhouse used as a car shop, Elkhorn City (the northernmost point of the Clinchfield Mainline), Shelby Yard, Beaver Junction where it connects to the Martin Branch, Deane, Arnold Fork Trestle, Ohio & Kentucky Junction Tunnel at Jackson, Elcatawa Hill at Chenowee Tunnel, Ravenna (which is the future restoration home of C&O Kanawha 2-8-4 #2716), Dry Fork Viaduct, Patio Junction, Howard’s Creek Viaduct, Red River Viaduct, Corbin Yard, Williamsburg with a little red caboose on display, Hickory Creek Tennessee, Morley Tunnels, Chaska near Duff mountain, Davis Creek Trestle, Cumberland (not Maryland), Loyall Yard, Baxter Tower, the Hagans Switchback at Smiley with 2697 wearing the Operation Red block slogan, & even mentions of the Wyoming Powder River Basin.

The former Chesapeake and Ohio lines are the most fascinating part of this video… Well worth the watch for ANY railfan who loves witnessing big freight trains move through rugged terrain.

This program shows how mostly CSX, and NS move coal throughout the state of Kentucky. Back before all of the CSX Mergers in the 80s and 90s. There were a lot of different lines running through the state. Now just CSX running through. Seeing some Santa Fe paint including Kodachrome paint too as they were leasing these engines from GE. CSX was just about to start getting some new widecab power. Many paint schemes prior to CSX paint is seen too. See Hagans Switchback in detail is covered too. And U Boats from U18Bs to U30Cs are seen as well, they were not going to be around too much longer with the new power ready to show up. A good program covering the lines of KY.

Eastern Kentucky is rugged country, and for railroads…. very challenging. This is a great video showing how hard the CSX & NS works to move coal. The scenery is awesome. Lots of trestles & tunnels to be seen. And some visitors to the region as Santa Fe units make an appearance. Well done.
