SP Daylight 4449 returned to the rails in 2002 for the Columbia-Deschutes Special, a 2-day excursion that took the mighty steamer through the Columbia River Gorge and the Deschutes River Canyon. Making the trip even more remarkable was the Daylight’s patriotic paint scheme: she was repainted in the same glorious red, white and blue she wore during the American Freedom Train tours of 1975-1976. The Columbia River Gorge and Deschutes Canyon provided outstanding settings for the magnificent locomotive and her Freedom Train colors. The Deschutes River Canyon is an inaccessible and visually stunning site where canyon walls rise 2,200 feet up from the tracks. 4449 looked gorgeous in her revisited colors, pulling former Amtrak “Heritage Fleet” and Northwest Rail Museum Daylight cars, unassisted by diesel helpers!

Leaving Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington, the Daylight traveled the north bank of the Columbia River for 110 miles. Then, turning south, she continued to Bend, demonstrating her awesome power. Highlights include fantastic pacing sequences, high bridge crossings, and an added segment showing the Daylight in all her different paint schemes! Bonus footage: The 1976 Interurban Press film The American Freedom Train (25 minutes) is included.

Yet another baller video made by Pentrex! Following the tragic events of 9/11, the SP 4449 crew thought it would be the right decision to repaint the 4449 in it’s American Freedom Train colors for a special excursion train. This is an amazing video to see if you’re a fan of the American Freedom Train!

Following the fateful events of of September 11th, 2001, I feel it very much WAS the right decision on the part of Doyle McCormick and the rest of the SP 4449 crew to bring her back to her Freedom Train colors. This trip was one for the ages, and this Pentrex special was very much on point (as always) in it’s coverage.
This is a “classic” 4449 outing… Just under different circumstances. Witnessing her in the stunning red, white, and blue is a POWERFUL symbol of hope, healing, and UNITY… It reminds us all that freedom is NOT free… and it reminds us to NEVER take it for granted, because it could all be gone tomorrow… Over 20 years after 9/11, we still remember the sacrifices our law enforcement officers and other first responders have made over the entire history of the United States. Likewise, we also never forget the sacrifices of our brave military service members, many of whom have also given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our liberty. We all owe them an ENORMOUS debt of gratitude for what we have.

The classic 1976 film is a WONDERFUL (and may I say very appropriate) bonus portion of this DVD… Makes it worth EVEN MORE to the average viewer.

This program has a very interesting history behind it, in fact we could see how the locomotive survived and it’s restoration to operational status thanks to Jack Holst taking care of it while it was on display at a park, and this was a perfect time thanks to the 9/11 tragedy in September 2001 in New York and it marks the 2nd time 4449 was in it’s freedom train paint scheme after it was last used in the Amtrak excursion in 1977 after the freedom train’s conclusion in 1976, and Doyle McCormick claims that he wanted to paint it as he felt it was a perfect time to do it.

Over the Years SP Daylight 4449 Provides some excellent specials in the Pacific Nothwest, and also Provides some excellent transcontinental trips in 1975-77 for the original Freedom Train, 1984 to New Orelans for the World’s Fair, and in 2009 to the Steam Railroading institute in Owosso Michigan for a special weekend-long party for Pere Marquette 1225 (The Real Polar Express Locomotive)’s huge Rebuild.

This Program made in 2002, features the second time 4449 was repainted in the 1970’s AFT Livery but to bring the dedicated tributes to the innocent citizens who lost their lives at New York City’s Twin Towers during the 9-11-01 attacks.

A year later in 2003, Tom McCommas & Joe Stachler of TM Books & video Provides some of the footage from that video to be used in the “I Love Toy Trains Part 12” Videotape during the American freedom train segment.

Aside from pentrex, Dave Goodheart was also there for the March 2002 excursion. As well as skyfire video which there were plans to release the skyfire version of 4449’s excursion from Portland to bend & back, but it was likely canceled for various reasons.

4449 is a beat of a loco it was in my hometown for the American Freedom Train tours in the 70s.

#4449 lets Freedom ring, whistle, huff, and puff with her slick red, white, and blue livery. I don’t think there’s any paint scheme that a Daylight doesn’t look good in! Not to mention the scenery it passes through! You’ll really enjoy this one!

The 4449 looks stunning with the American Freedom train livery like it did many years ago in 1975 when she was removed from being on display in Oaks park.

It’s good to see the 4449 in it’s American Freedom Train colors while pulling the train to Bend, Oregon it makes me proud to be an American.

A fairly short and sweet program showing Southern Pacific 4449 painted in the American Freedom Train colors. We see 4449 making the run from Portland to Bend, Oregon. In addition to watching the run there are some historical views, interview, and some views of the 4449 in her solid black paint for World War II and freight service. We also hear 4449’s air horn.
