Go deep into the valleys of eastern Kentucky, western Virginia, and eastern Tennessee as Rich Scheid and the Green Frog cameras follows the Kingsport line of CSX, formerly the Clinchfield Railroad. Enjoy real mountain railroading as CSX trains, many of them behind GE and EMD alternating current locomotives, move relentlessly through the Blue Ridge Mountains of the three states. Helper service abounds!

We start at Elkhorn City, the former northern terminus of the Clinchfield, and follow the line south through the fall colors past the Pool Point Trestle and through Clinchco, Fremont, Allen, Dante, St. Paul, Frisco, Kingsport and Johnson City to Erwin. Norfolk Southern also runs through the region, and we also see these thoroughbred trains in action.

Originally released in 2002, this 15th & final volume of the Green Frog CSX series which is also a Companion to Volume 13 that has a cab ride on this route, features a parade of coal trains, & mixed trains on the nearly 280 Mile Mainline that was once owned by the Clinchfield railroad.

Locations include Shelby, Sutton, Elkhorn City (Northern end of the Clinchfield), Milepost 1, Pool Point Tunnel & Bridge, Breaks Interstate Park with State Line Tunnel & along the Russell Fork River, Hayside with both the Russell & McClure Tunnels, Russell Siding with a crane referenced to a Southern 2-8-0 still in pieces today, Sights Mill Tunnel at Clincho, McClure bridge on Interstate 63, Perkins Tunnel, Fremont Station (since been relocated), Cannie Tunnel, Allan, Nora, Sandy Ridge Tunnel at Trammel, Dant Yard, Sun, St. Paul (Not Minnesota), Duncannon, Starnes, Clinch River Bridge, Hill Station with Rockslide Detector Poles & the South Twin Tunnel, Copper Creek Viaduct near Speers, Click Tunnel at Frisco, Waycross, Kingsport, Freehill Tunnel at Gray, Boone’s Creek Bridge, Johnson City, Haddam Siding (note the AC4400CW referenced to F unit 116 which was once Clinchfield 800), Rock City (note the AC4400CW referenced to a Gulf Mobile & Northern 4-6-2 on Pennsylvania’s Reading & Northern), & ends the entire series at Erwin.

This is the exact mainline where in November of 1992, Union Pacific Challenger 3985 traveled all the way from Cheyenne Wyoming to be disguised as Clinchfield 676 for the annual Santa Claus Train.

Aside from CSX, there are other road names like Norfolk Southern, & Conrail.

This final volume of the CSX series is a great add-on to the American Altavista’s This Is Clinchfield Collection.

All of these scenes were photographed in the fall of 2001.
