Enjoy a cab ride over the CSX’s Lurgan Subdivision from just east of Lurgan to CSX’s Hagerstown Yard. This former piece of the Western Maryland Railroad, known as the “Alphabet Route”, was an important interchange point with the former Reading Railroad. Today Conrail and CSX interchange at Lurgan with mixed freight and coal traffic just as the Reading and Western Maryland did years before. Our cab ride is on a SD40-2 Conrail locomotive with mixed freight interchanging with CSX.
The trip will take us by old “GN” tower at Lurgan, street running through Chambersburg, PA, and left hand running between Brandon and Conboy. Our train climbs a 1.10% grade for two miles beginning at Brandon.

From the eyes of a Conrail SD40-2, the cameraman took a Southbound Cab Ride in the Winter at locations like CP Ship, the abandoned GN Tower at Lurgan, Clearfield Road, Pinola, Culbertson, Salem Road, Plainfield, Siloham, Commerce Street at Heinz, King Street, Street Running through Chambersburg while passing by the already defunct Ames store on the east side of the screen, Hafer, Brandon Interlocking, Marathon Yard while going under the I-81 bridge, Zumbro, New Franklin Junction, Church Road at Guilford, Grindstone, Altenwald, Quinsonia junction at Conboy Crossing, Greendale, Waynecastle, Wingerton, Reid which is near the Maryland & Pennsylvania state line, Paramount, Pike, Plane, the connection to the Hanover Sub while passing by NC Tower, & ends at arriving at the Hagerstown Yard Limits while passing by the historic roundhouse which is now a museum.
Before the closing credits, a couple of Trackside Runbys of CSX Local D-773 led by Chessie System 6847 in Chambersburg & West Brandon are shown that has a bay window caboose on the rear.
While most of Steve’s titles are Un-Narrated, this program is one of the few shows to have narration surprisingly enough, even though there is commentary from the crew of the freight.
