Crawford Hill is a wonderful place of horseshoe curves and coal trains in the sandy hills of northwest Nebraska. This is Burlington Northern’s main route out of the Powder River coal basin. You’ll see a constant parade of massive coal trains, mostly led (and pushed) by SD70MAC units. Experience the awesome sight and sound of 20,000 horsepower dragging 16,000 ton trains around a horseshoe curve on the 2.2% grade of Crawford Hill. See the “Trough Train” too! See this railroad hot spot when it was still all-BN.

Heavy trains, steep grades, horseshoe curves and spectacular scenery … that’s Crawford Hill! This is pre-merger Burlington Northern, and SD70MACs in the handsome Grinstein Green paint scheme still rule the hill. Highball’s usual solid, creative photography captures the action with a nice mix of trackside shots and panoramic views that show the vastness of the landscape and the challenges it poses to the railroad. This program is 25 years old, and it’s still one of my favorite videos of a must-see railfanning location.

I bought this program, hoping to see GE C30-7’s on the point, which there were a few trains featuring these, great sounded locomotives. Program was good , but as with most Highball 4:3 full screen programs, does have a jitter problem, occurring every 2 to 3 minutes, sometimes being distracting, but still watchable. This problem did not occur, when Peter Crook owned Highball Productions. He deserves better.

Crawford Hill is one of those places that every rail fan needs to see in their lifetime. The scenery alone is awesome. This video is pre-BNSF days. Lots of coal trains conquer the hill. Pushers are as normal as breathing itself. Just an all around great video.
