See copper mining operations and the railroads associated with them from inside the operation. Jim Terrell filmed several copper operations in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. He was allowed to film the operations from the mine pits, the crushers, the smelters and at the loading of the final product into rail cars. Each facility had its own rail line to connect with class 1 railroads, mostly the Southern Pacific, in order to get the product to the end customer. Inside the operation, there were extensive narrow gauge railroads that moved materials intra-plant. We visit the Phelps Dodge Morenci Mine, American Smelting and Refining, Inspiration Consolidated Copper, Magma Arizona, Kennecott and more. These operations used Baldwin and ALCo diesels as well as an assortment of “critters” in plant. And, oh, yes! The wild desert scenery is magnificent.

Love seeing these old diesels grumbling along with loads of ore. This is a fascinating and entertaining look at just a handful of copper mining railroads.

Mining railroads are very unique in the fact that they serve primarily one function or a specific type of haulage on the rails…. that which is needed by the mines they run to. This is a great video, showing us the operations from the mines to the final products on a few different mining operations. The best part is …. the older power that we will never see on mainline action any more. Baldwins and Alcos are classics and amaizing to watch as they work hard with heavy ore trains. Excellent video,
