This is the old New York Central West Shore Route running along the Hudson from Albany (Selkirk) to northern New Jersey. Video taped in 1993 when Big Blue was running hard on this line. Contemporary railroading when this footage was shot almost 30 years ago, “Conrail’s River Line” now has a certain historical and sentimental charm to it. With the Hudson River Valley as a backdrop, the scenery is spectacular and makes the perfect setting for a vibrant and hard-working Conrail. The videography is well done, showing trains from trackside as well as panoramic views that capture the size and beauty of the valley. Whether you buy it for the trains or the scenery, you won’t be disappointed.

The Hudson River Valley is a very picturest scenic region. (I have seen it in person). The video presentation does ok with showing the region and the trains that pass through it. I will not say that it is a favorite, but I am diffinately pleased to own this video. Like most railroad videos… it is interesting to watch.

The DVD is done well with historical commentary about the line at the beginning and minimal commentary after. Locations, train symbols and locomotive types are brief. The entire train is shown and as most are mixed freight, with some unusual flatcar loads, it was interesting. The scenery was nice and because this line runs along the river, there were many shots of the train far away, then as it got closer, the view was trackside. Several shots through tunnels and across bridges were also interesting. I would recommend this to anyone interested in Northeast railroading.
