Conrail’s West Slope’s average grade of 1% is easier than the 1.5% grade of the East Slope, but it is longer, so helpers are needed for both ascending and descending the grade. This video covers the line through this fantastic helper district. You’ll see tremendous action between Gallitzin, PA and Johnstown, Pennsylvania We’ll see the tunnels at Gallitzin; village of Cresson (where helpers are based); action at Lilli; Cassandra (deep rock cut); action at Summer-hill; Southfork (and the connection with the branchline); Mineral Point (and the beautiful valley below); and finally Johnstown.

In volume 1 which was originally released in 1996, there are a great variety of diesels with big blue that have since been owned by CSX & Norfolk Southern at locations like Johnstown Pennsylvania with a detailed look at the station from both inside & outside, Park Hill, Mineral Point, South Fork, Summerhill, Sauman Mine at Portage, Cassandra, Lilly, Cresson which is near the summit of the Alleghenies that includes the station bed & breakfast inn, & an observation platform, & ending at the hot spot of the Gallitzin Tunnels.
Aside from Conrail, there are other road names like Amtrak’s 3 Rivers, the Johnstown Incline Railway, Santa Fe, LMS, & Union Pacific.
These scenes were photographed in both the fall & winter.
