Part 1: Featuring the color film Karl Walters, Vignettes of the Baltimore and Ohio, Volume 1 documents Karl’s penchant for branch lines and smaller steam locomotives. Karl was trackside during the transition years on the B&O to film steam engine classics and the newest diesels. P1s, Q4s, on the branch lines around Cambridge, Zanesville, Holloway, Benwood, and Washington Court House contrast with big 6s and EM-1s. Other locomotives seen include FTs, Sharks, E8s, and more, with additional locations seen including Grafton, WV, Willard, OH, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Cumberland, Columbus.

Part 2: The second volume of this series features the B&O’s finest steam. From rare 1954 film footage we see steam powering passenger trains on the West End between Grafton, West Virginia and Cumberland, Maryland. We also steam at the head end of freights over Sand Patch Grade and coal trains on the old Buffalo Rochester and Pittsburgh near Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Steamers featured include EL-5s, and EM-1s, Big 6s and Q-4s, T-3s and T-4 4-8-2 Mountains. Bill captured not only the head end action, but also the rear-end pushers which were, and still are, common on Sand Patch. Many scenes feature authentic B&O steam audio recorded in the 1950’s. Massive, modern steam power thundering through some of the prettiest scenery in the East – all preserved by the camera of William Price.

Part 3: Watch rare film from the 1940s and 1950s of B&O steam, much of it on Sand Patch Grade. Mostly color, some 1940s film is in B&W. This is film from William Price, Donald Wertz and Charlie Houser featuring classic steam locomotives such as: EM1, T-3, Q-4 and more. Some diesel included too, from E and F units to early Geeps. Locations include Cumberland, Corriganville, Hyndman, Williams, Bracken, Fairhope, Mance, Sand Patch and Keystone with some BR&P in East Salamanca, New York.

Part 4: This is a time of transition for the B&O: Steam to diesel, first generation to second generation diesel, B&O to B&O/C&O and from the 1950s to the 1960s. Rare film gives us a peek at that exciting time. Photographer William Price filmed the passenger and freight action at many locations on the West End from Cumberland to Grafton, and over Sand Patch to Meyersdale from 1955 to 1965. We’ll see EM-1s and Big 6s with FAs, E- and F- units, and early Geeps working with GP30s and GP35s, and Chesapeake and Ohio units mixing in after the 1964 consolidation.
