The Columbia River Gorge of the Pacific Northwest is rich in scenery from snow capped mountains to magnificent waterfalls. This is the backdrop for Union Pacific’s Portland Subdivision between Portland and Hinkle Yard.
Manifest trains make their way to and from UP’s classification yard at Hinkle while expedited intermodal trains race between western ports in Portland, Tacoma and Seattle to intermodal hubs around Chicago. With a gentle grade and many high-speed curves, this water-level route through the Cascades is ideal for long, heavy trains. Add the breath-taking scenery found along the gorge and you have the perfect recipe for great train watching.
See UP’s mighty SD90 MACs pounding the rails with 130 car potash trains! ES45AC’s on the point of long double-stack trains! Vintage geeps in local service and much more, all in the spectacular setting of the Columbia River Gorge!
With UP and BNSF (in Part 2) railroad tracks for company, the mighty Columbia River carves its way through the Cascade Mountains as it fashions much of the boundary between Oregon and Washington State. Action was shot between June 2011 and February 2012.

It’s hard to tell which is more impressive, the scenery or the trains. Together … and in the hands of a videographer with the eye of an artist … they make for a stunning railfanning experience. Look for 7idea’s usual outstanding camerawork, with narration that enhances the program while still leaving room for the sound of the trains. The first volume in 7idea’s two-part series follows the Union Pacific’s Portland Sub; volume two, covering BNSF’s Fallbridge Sub, is every bit as good. For my money, 7idea’s “Columbia River Gorge” programs are as close to perfect as railfan videos get.

Columbia River Gorge is beautful. I purchased a pentrex series on it a few years ago. I liked the Pentrex but I LOVE the this producer more!. I would recommend this video to all of my rail fan friends. Beautiful scenery and great production quality. Worth the purchase and I think I would buy more from this producer.

A great video from a great producer. Because of the subject railroads and the beautiful scenery, you really can’t find a bad Columbia Gorge video… but this series is the best of the bunch. 7idea really finds great angles to see the trains… it is nto just trackside and head on. Highly recommended!

The video on this tape is as good as any you’d see on TV. The scenery is nice and the trains are even better. Just a well done job all around.
