The amount of coal transported by rail each year continues to grow. The Burlington Northern and the Chicago & North Western benefit greatly by hauling this coal out of the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Watch as each railroad uses its own main line, and then work together on the joint line moving the coal out of the state. The Burlington Northern’s 5th Sub from east of Gillette, southeast through Newcastle is the easternmost line. This section of railroad hosts much of the BN’s coal traffic and also has plenty of general freight and priority trains as well.

The Chicago and North Western operates over a section of its old “Cowboy Line” from Crandall to Shawnee toward the mines. On the Powder River Sub, the C&NW’s Dash 9-44 and AC4400CW locomotives lead trains along with a sampling of Union Pacific power.

Then the two railroads join together on the BN’s 10th Sub, which is also the BN/CNW joint line. This corridor is the direct link to a majority of the Powder River Basin coal mines.

Photographed before, during, & after Union Pacific’s takeover of the Chicago & Northwestern, as well as before the merger with both Santa Fe & Burlington Northern to create today’s BNSF the following September, there are a huge variety of diesels hauling lots & lots of loaded & empty hoppers filled with coal.

Motive Power includes SD40-2s, C30-7s, Dash 8-40CWs, C39-8s, C40-8s, SD70Macs, Dash 9-44CWs, & even the brand new SD90MACs which was the last new diesels for the BN before the merger with the AT&SF the following September after these scenes were recorded.

Aside from BN, UP, AT&SF, & C&NW, there are some other road names like General Motors Demonstration SD50s, LMX, Electro-Motive Division’s SD60 & SD70M Demonstration units, Norfolk Southern, & Montana Rail Link.

Locations include Gillette on the 10th sub, East Donkey Creek Junction on the 5th Sub, West Rozet, Rozet, Moorcroft, Osage, East Osage, Pedro, West Newcastle in the snow on one scene, Newcastle Yard & depot where there hasn’t been any passenger trains since 1969, Highway 85 overpass at East Newcastle, Braun, Crandall, Barnes, West Barnes, the water tower from the steam years at Lusk, East Myles, Keeline at Milepost 507, Lost Springs during a Blizzard on one scene, Shawnee Junction, Bill, West C&NW Junction, Logan, East Nacco, Antelope Mine, West Nacco, East Reno (Not Nevada), & ends at the Black Thunder Coal Mine at Reno Junction near Milepost 430.
