1980 was the year we saw the revival of former C&O 4-8-4 number 614 return to steam and power the Chessie Safety Express excursions. Superb action scenes make you wish you were back there 30 years ago to see this great action.

It took the destruction of Reading 2101 in a fire the spring of 1979 to resurrect 614, a Greenbriar class 4-8-4 that had formerly operated on the Chesapeake and Ohio. 614 history is recounted and by the fall of 1980 #614 was ready and she traveled to Harpers Ferry, Cumberland, 17 Mile Grade, Sand Patch, Richmond, Balcony Falls, Clifton Forge, Huntington, Charleston, and New River trains to Hinton. Limited narration and live train sounds

  1. Jeremy C. Schultz

Greg Scholl starts things off right with the history of Reading 2101 and the whole Chessie Safety Express story. Ross Rowland’s 614 is quite a beast! She does a great job through all the areas of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia mentioned… ESPECIALLY through the New River Gorge. Nice sound and narration.

  2. rickyfreni

In the first installment of the 614 trilogy, it starts with a history of the engine as well as the chessie steam specials with reading 2101 which includes the 1979 roundhouse fire. Throughout this program the late John Edward Hingsbergen does some informative narration for the history, as well as some still images so that the narration doesn’t interfere with the original audio. Unfortunately Greg forgot to credit Hingsbergen in the closing sequence. Overall, great trip to expensive what it was like almost 40 years in the making.
