Take a front seat ride and enjoy an engineer’s-eye view of the last four decades along the old Clinchfield Railroad. Ride along includes graphic identity of significant points, video maps of yards and interchange tracks, and a running commentary by train crews and railroad managers. We’ll see the great South End locations: Love Hill, Erwin Yard, Chestoa Road, Unaka Springs, Nolichucky Gorge, Poplar Siding, Coopers Branch, Green Mountain, Brushy Creek, Kona, Minpro, Holdout, Flotation, Altapass, Sevier Signal, Marion, Thermal, Bostic Yard, Broad River, and Lawson’s Fork.

NOTE: Some of the video segments come from older film and tape, with some multi-generation and slow-speed quality-loss issues. Every point of interest is represented. Produced by Bob Loehne, American AltaVista, 1991. Re-Mastered, Color Correction, and UP-Converted to 1080i HD resolution by Green Frog Productions, 2021.

In this installment of the American Altavista Clinchfield series which was originally released as volume 3 part 2 (Part 1 of volume 3 covers the Northbound trip from Erwin to Elkhorn City), it starts with a small tribute to Mr. JD Davis who was born in February 1927 & died in August of 1991 during the NRHS convention in Huntington West Virginia. Afterwards, we are at the throttle on different engines during different years: CSX F unit 116 (once Clinchfield 800 & later Chesapeake & Ohio 8016 on the Potomac Eagle scenic railroad) during October of 1990, vintage films of Clinchfield 10-wheeler number 1 that is on display at the Baltimore & Ohio Museum, an SD40-2 in September of 1987, & an unidentified diesel during 1968, not to mention a flashback to 1985. Aside from Narrator Bob Loehne, there are commentaries by CF Bailey, Wayne Cable, Bob Edwards, & Jim Goforth. There are countless crossings, sidings, bridges (both under highways & over rivers), tunnels, stations (which some have since been demolished), meets with other freight trains, yards, mountains, & even the loops along the way. Aside from CSX & Clinchfield, there are other road names like Seaboard, Chessie System, & Family Lines. Sometimes there are scenes with a special speed-up effect due to some locations on the Erwin to Spartanburg line having restricted slow orders.

This is one of the few American Altavista titles that are owned by Green Frog Productions.
