Famed rail photographer Emery Gulash once said “to be a railfan in the mid 1950’s in or near Chicago was a double barrel dream”. If that’s the case, being a Chicagoland railfan in the early 1990s meant capturing the great railroads before they were gone. Dennis Jenko caught these soon to be fallen flags: ATSF, BN, CCP, CNW, CR, CSX, EJ&E, IHB, SOO, and WC.

If that’s the case, being a railfan in the early 1990’s meant capturing all the great railroads of Chicagoland before they were just memories. Dennis Jenko started capturing mainline action around 1990 covering all the flags that were about to fall, including ATSF, BN, CCP, CNW, CR, CSX, EJ&E, IHB, SOO, WC, and others.

Mainline action at many popular locations, including some Emery Gulash Locations, are covered in this last of the Chicago Odyssey series from Dennis. This might be the best Odyssey yet! Excellent coverage of the BN west of Aurora in amazing afternoon light. At least a good 30-40 min of Conrail in NWI, excellent fall lighting. EJ&E, WC and CCP runbys at track speed are something! IAIS 900 leading at Joliet. Got some fantastic classic SOO sprinkled in. Can’t forget the 1993 flood detours! Wow! A nice view of the BN executive train at track speed running west from Chicago with an A-B-A set. I know I’m missing things but wow. What a time to be alive! Excellent quality, sound and picture.
