Here is former Nickel Plate Berkshire-type locomotive 765, repainted, renumbered, and modified to resemble its former cousins, the 2-8-4s named Kanawhas by the C&O. The 765/2765 headed up three Fall Foliage excursions through the spectacular New River Gorge in 1993 and Pentrex followed the masquerading 2765 on its trips from Huntington, West Virginia, to Hinton and back, through one of the most popular train watching spots on the continent. Here is thrilling steam locomotive action twisting along a rocky river gorge, and scenic West Virginia mountains bathed in glorious fall colors.

Engineer Rich Melvin invites us into the cab for the ride from Montgomery to Thurmond, and explains what he’s doing and how the engine is performing. He has plenty to say as the locomotive pulls upgrade on wet rails, slipping its drivers again and again as it makes its way through the gorge towards Hawks Nest. Experience the echoing sounds of the steam whistle, the rumble and roar of the locomotive as it flashes past our camera, and the excitement of steam power thundering up and down the mainline again in C&O 2765, New River Masquerade!

You will enjoy a truly “in-depth” experience with Nickel Plate Berk #765 throughout this video. It is one you will want to watch over and over. In a world before September 11th, 2001, production teams like Pentrex had the great privilege of being invited into the cab of the locomotive for extended periods of time. This film highlights all the “nitty-gritty” of what it takes to run a big steamer up a half percent grade with a load of over 30 cars and demanding 6, 7, and 8 degree curvature. Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society Engineer Rich Melvin explains to the viewing audience exactly what he is doing in real time. You will get to see him and fireman Steve Winicker coax as much power as they can out of our beloved, beautiful 2-8-4. The colors of autumn were at their best as #765 gracefully navigated the old C&O mainline from Huntington to Hinton and return with a train full of SUPER lucky passengers. The “masquerade” as a Kanawha was a very appropriate fit for these trips. Superb runbys and loud stack-talk are the name of the game whenever #765 is in town. This coverage of the 1993 New River Train is a worthy addition to anyone’s railroad DVD collection. It is a wonderful trip down “memory lane” for those of us who love to reminisce about better days, and about #765 doing what she did best. She NEVER fails to impress. So… Sit back in your favorite TV chair, grab your pumpkin spice latte, pop in this DVD, and enjoy being a part of railroad history in October 1993!

With a great variety of trackside locations, vintage black & white photographs, & even commentaries from engineer Rich Melvin from both on the ground & inside the cab from Montgomery to Thurmond, this program marks the final time that pentrex has encountered with the engine from Fort Wayne Indiana. Besides pentrex, main line Motion pictures & Greg Scholl was there for the new river trips.

A great video with the history of the C&O Kanawha’s. The train twisting through the new river gorge with the fall colored trees in the background even the 2765 incredible stack talk.
