What’s better than a passenger train chasing you? Well, how about a second trip up the mountain, but this time engine #484 (a 2-8-2) pulls a freight train of 10 cars and caboose. This is maximum tonnage for this locomotive on this piece of railroad, and #484 puts on quite a show. Several times the engine is very close behind our escort train, and it is quite exciting to see and hear every exhaust, whistle, and curve as the train snakes along the Rocky Mountain ledges behind you. The higher we travel in elevation the deeper the snow gets, and by the time we reach Cumbres Pass, at 10,015 feet we are in a deep trench of snow. You’ll start from the town of Chama and feel like you are back in time, as you experience a view that few people get to see.
Through special arrangements with the railroad we chartered a freight train, and an escort train to use as a camera platform and videotaped the entire trip from Chama, New Mexico to Cumbres, Colorado where the mountain pass is finally reached at an elevation of 10,015 feet. See the train climb the mountain from a unique perspective – this is a view of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad that you can not get even by going there! This is an unforgettable journey – the train chases YOU!

This 1998 videotape/2004 DVD was shot in may of 1997 During Production of the Rocky Mountain Snowplow & First Train to toltec videos. Volume 2 covers the same route as volume 1, but with 484 on a freight, and also captivated/improved running to Greg’s Camera. The segment Between Hamilton’s Point & Windy Point was later shown in the 2018 DVD: Narrow Gauge Steam in the ’90s, but with Christopher Kovacs (Trainmaster844) narrating. If you can’t afford a ride to one of america’s longest running steam powered tourist railroads, why not the railroad come to you?
