In the early 1990s, Pentrex embarked upon a fascinating tour of Mexico’s railroading operations. The Northern portion of the country was featured in our first release, “Northern Mexico Rails.” Now we continue that journey of exploration as we travel toward Mexico City and investigate the lines running east of the capital. You’ll have an opportunity to see the new electrified section of the railroad and visit one of North America’s best railroading hot spots. Then you’ll head further east to the railway museum at Puebla, and catch lots of big ALCo in all types of service along the way.
A cab ride over the last remaining section of narrow gauge allows you to savor a few final moments on a soon-to-be-replaced monument of old time railroading. Finally, you’ll venture into the incredible mountain passes of eastern Mexico, where freight trains often run with two sets of mid-train helpers. The freights snake around sharp curves, pulled by sets of General Electric Super Sevens. Mexico’s railroads, with their older railroading traditions still preserved, are truly captivating, and so is the beautiful countryside through which they operate. In this installment of the Pentrex Mexico Railways collection, the crew traveled to discover what the central part of the country has to offer. Which includes the 8000 to 14000 series diesels with a G12 & a rare Alco RS11, More & More people & animals getting on & off passenger trains as well as working on the railroad, & even the Narrow-Gauge operations.
Locations include Queretarro with 4-6-2 number 2520 on display, La Griega, Huehuetoca with lots of steamers & early diesels in the scrap yard, Lecheria north of Mexico City, Teotihuacan depot, Calderon Junction, Apizaco Yard, Puebla with a visit to the museum that has more steamers, more diesels & even an electric box cab, Mt. Popo, Grahales, Oriental to connect with the narrow gauge that has 2-8-0 number 143 on display, Libres, Ocotepec, Martel with a rusty abandoned coach, Zautla, Zaragosa, Tezuitlan yard & depot, Jalapa Yard, Bonderia Loops, Cruz Verdi, Cordoba, the tall bridge at Metlac, Orizaba, & on the new line with a less steeper grade than the old route near Esparanzo.
During the cab ride on the narrow gauge, the crew aboard the diesel makes coffee.

Mexican railroading….. slightly different from the American & Canadian ways. And this video shows it. Modern diesels to the old alcos working hard on mountain grades through some gorgeous scenery. And thrown in is a cab ride…. on narrow gauge. Very interesting.
