We’re primarily in the western provinces, so Canadian Pacific is the dominant road – but we do see other Canadian railroads. The begin with a 1952 journey from Vancouver aboard Train #2, behind steam as far as Revelstoke. We pass steam and diesel lead trains along the route. Two trains have Selkirk 2-10-4’s in the mountain region. We also get a side trip to ride a CN diesel powered mixed train or two in Jasper. We end this trip in Calgary. Our return to Vancouver is a steam powered trip along the CPR’s southern mainline through Nelson and rejoining the mainline at Odlum, near Hope.

Next we ride behind ( with a bit of a cab ride) 2-8-2 #5469. We also get a cab ride in an F-unit on train #1, the “Canadian”. We ride westbound, and enjoy scenes from the cab of #1 including a CN freight across the Thompson River that is lead by 2-10-2 #4301. We later meet a passenger train with Royal Hudson #2681!. This trip ends at Boston Bar, B.C.

We get a winter trip eastbound on Rogers Pass. These shots are from the dome car of “The Dominion”. The lead unit is F #1400, with a B-unit trailing – but – behind that is Royal Hudson 2837. We ride the cab of the diesel and see several train meets, mostly steam.

We continue our trip along Lake Superior with our final destination of Parry Sound, Ontario.

Another winter trip begins at Glacier, heading east then the next morning ending at Sunset near Portage la Prairie. This trip is also shot from dome car “Dominion”. The final scenes show the train passing through White River and on to Parry Sound once again. While the riding is all diesel powered, there are a couple of CPR steam trains seen at Parry Sound.

Next is a variety segment with a lot of different subjects, including Canadian National around Edmonton, and some Northern Alberta footage of 2-10-0 #57 on a freight. Then we move to eastern Canada with some footage outside Montreal including some CN and CPR, with steam and diesel, followed by some scenes of #2823 getting coaled. Montreal streetcars are seen as well as a CN electric emerging from the Mount Royal Tunnel.

A nice visit to the roundhouse near Calgary nets us footage of Selkirk class 2-10-4 #5931. This engine was saved from the scrapper’s torch, so it’s nice to see it in steam here with about 2 minutes of coverage. Some odd shots like coverage of a CPR mixed train, a Royal Hudson chase round out this segment.

Back west, we are at Vancouver Island, where we see shortline logging operations with Comox, MacMillan & Bloedel #1044, Hillcrest Lumber Climax #10 from two visits, and some ferry rides to and from the mainline. We ride the Esquimalt and Nanaimo RDC from Victoria to Courtenay, BC.

    With a great variety of steam locomotives on mostly Canadian Pacific that features the 2800 series royal hudsons to the 5900 series 2-10-4 Selkirks to a handful of Canadian National power as well as multiple early diesels like EMD F-7’s & Alco FPA2s, there are also logging locomotives on Vancouver island with Hillcrest lumber climax 10 which is now at the since been closed Mt. rainier scenic railroad in Elbe Washington. However there are mostly onboard footages from the coaches, a cab ride on an F-7, a cab ride on a Budd car, & also on a ferry boat with plenty of action at sea. This is a great companion to Vintage rail journey from 2010, & like many of Greg’s 2018 titles minus 819 Arkansas steam & return to Deshler, this was narrated by Christopher Kovacs (Trainmaster844).
