The descriptions for the scenery that CP’s Mountain Sub runs through are all inadequate. The sub runs from Golden to Revelstoke, British Columbia, through some of the most stunning scenery on the continent. Lots of snow on the mountains, AC4400’s, SD90MAC’s and tired SD40-2’s provide the action. All the famous locations, Field, Ottertail, Leanchoil, Palliser, Glenogle, Donald, Beavermouth, Rogers, Mount MacDonald tunnel, Stoney Creek (a long hike in!), Connaught tunnel, Mount Shaughnessy tunnel, Ross Creek, Illecillewaet, Albert Canyon and lots more. CP’s newest power in magnificent surroundings in June, 1999.

There’s nothing better than going on an adventure in the Western Canadian Rockies, as there is a parade of great diesel action on Canadian Pacific with SD40-2s, AC4400CWs, & SD90MACs with a Chopped Nose GP9 number 1567 on a local at Golden & other road names like the Rocky Mountaineer for instance at various locations like Field British Columbia with the Kicking Horse River & Mt. Stephen, Ottertail curves & a siding, Glencoil, Palleser, Glen Oko, Kicking Horse Canyon with Rafters, Ployster at Milepost 31, Holtz Tunnel, KC Junction at Golden with a work train that has 2 cabooses for some reason, Moberly at Milepost 42, Ord Siding, Donald, Beavermouth alongside the Beaver & Columbia Rivers, Rogers, Fraine, Beaver Valley, the 2 Stoney Creek Bridges, Mt. Shaughnessy Tunnel, Connaught Tunnel, Mt. MacDonald Tunnel, Mt. Sir Donald at Ross Peak, Milepost 94, Black Creek, MacDonald Curve, the Laurie Snowsheds, Inner Silouette, Albert Canyon, Greeley, & ends at Revelstoke Yard with a Crew Change.

All in all, Pete Falconi did a well-done job narrating this 75-minute video that was photographed in June of 1999 which at the same time but several days later, the California State Railroad Museum in old Sacramento hosted the final Major US Train-themed event of the 20th century from the 18th to the 27th known as Railfair ’99.

This is one of those railfan videos that’s worth buying just for the scenery; colorful, hard-working trains make it a “must have”! Highball’s usual exceptional videography captures the railroad action through a nice mix of close-up trackside shots and stunning panoramic views. The trains sound great as they struggle against a challenging landscape and … at the time this video was shot, more than 20 years ago … CP’s venerable SD40-2s were still earning their keep on the Mountain Sub. Well done, Highball!

  3. Lloyd

CP’s Mountain Sub & Rogers Pass is amoungest the most difficult in North America for any railroad. This is a land of high peaks, narrow passages, glaciers, and tough grades for the railroad to battle. The video shows the region at it’s best. Whether you are a fan of railroads or awesome scenery…. you will love this production.

Good showing of CP in action in the mountainous regions of Canada.

I don’t own many Canadian videos but I now own this production and I am very pleased on my purchase. The scenery and narration along with the professional video photography makes this video a must have for the rail fan looking at the Canadian experience.

I have this as part of the Canada by rail set. This is a great companion to Heart of the Rockies, and really shows the drama of the Mountain sub well – a land of helpers and massive projects.

Another great video from Highball. If you’re familiar with them, you’ll know the standards at which this video is shot. The trains aren’t particularly interesting, CP is almost entirely unit trains in the area. However, the scenery is second to none.

  8. Eddy

This a terrific DVD by Highball Productions, showcasing the best of Canadian Pacific’s scenic route through Rogers Pass. Shots are varied and very interesting, taken under different weather and lighting conditions. This DVD would be of additional interest to those who are fans of CP’s former fleet of EMD SD90MACs.
