We enjoy 2839 on a two day one-way excursion from Alexandria to Atlanta and thus begins a two-year stint of exciting action of a great locomotive playing out its final years and miles of service. In part 1 of “2839, A Royal Farewell” we see first weekend of operations from Alexandria to Atlanta over some 600 miles of Southern Railway mainline trackage. We see everything from the engine stalling on grades, and operation of the booster to get started, plus some fast running with this 8 coach train. The engine looks superb still in Canadian Pacific Livery, as it heads toward Birmingham where it will be “Southernized”. Coverage continues in May of 1979 with trips from Cincinnati to Danville and a trackside view of High Bridge. The great sound of 2839’s exhaust, and mellow Southern PS4 whistle make this engine one of our favorite excursion engines. All footage was originally Super 8 Sound.

This program showcases some of the early excursions performed by 2839 in 1979, for the Southern Railway. Begin with the locomotive, still in CPR livery, as it heads for Birmingham to be ‘Southernized’. Then, watch the engine pull an excursion from Cincinnati, OH to Danville, KY. Finally, the 2839 pulls a one-way trip from Ludlow to Louisville, KY.
