The California Western Railroad is a unique shortline headquartered in the Northern California coastal town of Ft. Bragg. The railroad heads forty miles inland, climbing over the rugged coastal mountain range before reaching the town of Willits. Owned by Kyle Railways at the time this was filmed in 1991, this historic line is probably best known for its Skunk Motorcars, which have been featured on several network television programs.

Pentrex invites you to explore the entire California Western Railroad. Ride in the cab and on the tender of the steam engine as it works upgrade through the redwood forests and along the Noyo River to Northspur. Our specially arranged hi-rail vehicle will put you right ahead of the locomotive as it winds its way over the scenic line. You will also hi-rail ahead of a freight train with an Alco diesel on the point, and ahead of the Skunk railcar. The California Western is a fascinating and well-maintained short line railroad. The scenery is superb as seen from the train or at trackside from a number of different runby locations. Don’t miss this delightful look at the California Western Railroad.

This is a Pentrex Best Seller.

Known to many people as “The Skunk Train”, the California Western Railroad operates Steam, Diesel, & Trolley powered freight & passenger trains from the Pacific Ocean at Fort Bragg to Willits for the Connection with the California Northern & Northwestern Pacific through Ranch, Grove, the halfway point of Northspur, the 30 degree Horseshoe Curve at Soda Springs, Shake city, Crowley, Tunnel 1 which is measured at 1122 feet long, Tunnel 2 at the Summit, Emmet, & along the Noyo River.

Fort Bragg is a lovely seaside town near the Pacific Ocean which includes Restaurants, & Hotels, plus the railroad’s own workshop & gift shop.

There are not only scenes from the ground, but also cab rides, & head-on chases from Motorcar 300 built in 1935, to 2-8-2 Mikado type steam engine number 45 built by Baldwin in 1924, not to mention Alco RS-11 number 62 built in 1955.

The Trolleys operate all year long except on Thanksgiving, Christmas, & New Year’s Day.

This program that was filmed in 1990 was also available on the “Great American Scenic Railroads” series by Questar.

Another hour-long “super-tape” that gives one a taste of what it is like to go straight through the Redwood Forest on a steam passenger train. This is one tourist line I’m grateful Pentrex put on DVD, as I have always wanted to go to California and ride on this railroad, but have never had the opportunity to do so.

SEE THIS HISTORICAL LINE BASED AT FORT BRAGG. HEAD UP 4O MINUTES INLAND GOING UP AND OVER RUGGED MOUNTAIN TERRAIN AND ARRIVE IN WILLITS, CALIFORNIA. SEE THE SKUNK CARS AND SEE IT GO THRU THE REDWOOD FOREST(BEAUTIFUL) AND BY THE NOYO RIVER, A VERY WELL MAINTAINED SHORT LIVED LINE. GREAT SCENERY ALSO ALONG THE THE WAY. 60 MINUTES LONG.
