Beginning in 1983 our video cameras capture Burlington Northern’s E units in suburban service between Chicago’s Union Station and Aurora plus other locations in between. Also included is a mix of freights along the triple track as well as Amtrak from this time period.

Prevalent is Amtrak footage mixed in with the BN suburban trains shot from Roosevelt Road just south of Union Station. During the busiest of the afternoon rush hour BN suburban trains were scheduled to depart every 4 minutes! Coverage ends on August 30, 1992 with the Farewell to the BN E Unit excursion. Chicago Union Station footage and footage shot from the cab was taken by the late Mark Singer of Aurora to whom this video is dedicated.

Years before Burlington Northern was merged with the Santa Fe in late September of 1995, the late Roger Holmes with additional angles by Mark Singer traveled to the Greater Chicago Area for not only a parade of diesels, but also some other Road Names like Amtrak, Metra Commuter Rail & even a Blue & Yellow Santa Fe NW2 switching in the Union Station area, not to mention the since been gone American Orient Express, as well as Via Rail traveling from Canada.

In addition to the Trackside action from Chicago Union Station with scenes from the road bridge to Aurora, there is also a cab ride on the E-Unit out of Union Station with an Air Whistle instead of a horn for some reason, as well as the last coach of the train back to Union Station at other locations like Western Ave, Cicero, Clyde, Berwyn, Harlem Ave, Riverside, Hollywood (Not California), Brookfield, La Grange (not Kentucky), Western Springs, Hinsdale, Claredon Hills, Westmont, Fairview Ave, Downer’s Grove, Belmont, Lisle, Naperville, & Aurora.

This is one of the few Roger Holmes productions titles where there is a little bit of narration, as well as one of several that were reissued by Green Frog Productions.

Many years after these scenes were recorded, the BN E-Units have since been retired, moved to other road names or gone for scrap, but so to have been the F-40s.
