Burlington Northern used their latest power to conquer this 13-mile section of railroad. Crawford Hill sees over 40 trains a day, most requiring helper engines as they battle steep grades, s-curves, and even back-to-back horseshoe curves. Watch a wide variety of locomotives including C30-7s, SD40-2s, GP30s, Oakway SD-60s and SD70MACs growl up the hill.

A highlight is the red, white and blue locomotive “Desert Storm”, number 1991. We see several appearances of #1991 on the hill. Just one of the many spectacular scenes on “Burlington Northern’s Crawford Hill”.

I was glad to see this program released on DVD; after more viewings than I could count, the VHS tape was showing its age. Iron Horse America has always shot superb video, and that skill is very evident here with solid, creative camerawork from all the best-known Crawford Hill locations. Recorded just before the BNSF merger, there’s still plenty of Cascade Green on The Hill, the Grinstein Green SD70MACs are new, clean and looking sharp, and Desert Storm locomotive #1991 in its patriotic paint scheme is a nice bonus. With any luck, I’ll wear out the DVD copy, too!

Filmed for several days before its merger with the Santa Fe later in September of 1995, this program features a great variety of coal trains on the Butte subdivision with Many Diesels from C30-7’s & SD40-2’s, to the SD70MACS which were the final diesels built for Burlington Northern before merging with the AT&SF. Several scenes of number 1991 is included as well as other diesels on Union Pacific, & EMD. Overall, Bob Taylor did an outstanding job narrating this program.
