Burlington Northern purchased 242 of the model of the 1,137 built between 1976 and 1986, putting them in two different road number slots, 142 of them going into the 5000 – 5141 series and the remaining 100 into the 5500 – 5599 number series. While not as numerous on the BN as the EMD SD40-2, of which the Burlington Northern owned 835 of the used in all sorts of service, the C30-7 was found to be an excellent locomotive for the coal trains out of the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. We see these beasts in action in Illinois and Nebraska (shot between 1985 and 1999).

Railfans remember the model for the distinctive chugging sound that was unique to the GE FDL series prime movers. This is Volume 2 in the George Redmond Railfanning series.

NOTE: No narration.

This is vintage seventies and eighties footage, shot using equipment of that day. It is not as sharp as programs shot today. Still, these are interesting scenes of long-gone railroads and equipment.
