With some of our oldest and most historic footage from the earliest days of motion picture film, this DVD shows the development of motive power in Eastern railroading. Beginning with diminutive Atlantics and American 4-4-0s hauling open platform wooden coaches the story continues up through the superpowered Berks and Santa Fe’s of the WWII years, including the early streamliner, the “Flying Yankee.”

Two thirds of the DVD is devoted to a survey of Boston & Maine steam power in the mid-30s: switchers, Atlantics, Moguls, 10 wheelers, Consolidations, light and heavy Pacifics, Santa Fe’s and Berkshires all arranged in order of size, small to large.

The oldest and newest steam power appears in dozens of run pasts system-wide including solid block refrigerator freights and passenger trains pulling brass railed observation cars. The final part of this tape shows Boston & Maine branch line operations at the time both in summer and winter featuring the busiest branches.

In this installment of the New England Steam Series from 1990 through the films of Mr. Albert G. Hale, there are the 400 series 0-6-0s (one engine numbered 449 is referenced to Amtrak’s Westbound Lake Shore Limited from Boston to Chicago), the 900 series 4-4-0s, the 3200 series 4-4-2 Atlantics, the 1300 & 1400 series 2-6-0 Moguls with an appearance by future famous survivor 1455 that now resides on display at the Danbury Connecticut Railway Museum, the 2000 series 4-6-0 10 Wheelers, the 2300 & 2400 series 2-8-0 Consolidations with one of them hauling the Alouette, the 3600 & 3700 Series 4-6-2 Pacifics with future famous survivor 3713 (under restoration at Steamtown in Scranton Pennsylvania) hauling the Red Wing, a couple of the Santa Fe type 2-10-2s, & the 4000 series 2-8-4 Berkshires (same numbers as the Union Pacific Big Boys). Plus, there are a couple of clips scenes of the Doodle Bug motor cars, the streamlined Flying Yankee.

Locations include Boston’s North Station which was filmed way before the debut of Amtrak’s Downeaster & the Mass Bay Transit Authority Commuter Rail, East Somerville MA, Lexington MA, Fitchburg MA, Billerica MA, Montvale on the Stoneham Branch, the White Mountain Branch, the Saugus Branch (now part of a Bicycle trail), the Marblehead Branch, Downtown Salem MA, West Peabody MA with some semaphore signals, the Essex Branch, Baldpate on the Newburyport Branch, the Amesbury Branch, Bedford MA, the Clinton Branch, the Townshend Branch, the Pepperell Branch, & Winchendon.

On the Salem & Lowell, a 400 series 0-6-0 is pushing a wedged plow through the snow.
