The Frisco made it to Monett, Missouri first and for almost 100 years was the largest employer in town. BN bought the Frisco and was still a big presence there. The 1995 merger saw BNSF take over and it didn’t take many years before they sold off most of the sub. The Monett Sub is no more.
Let’s tour the Monett Sub in 1999, prior to the sale of the line. We also get a heaping helping of the former ATSF Cherokee Sub. These two end-to-end subs truly show off the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe merger. The merger is so fresh here that there is very little BNSF paint, and no orange paint. We see mostly BN Green and Santa Fe Warbonnets.
This informative program is narrated, and many locations and trains are marked with on-screen captions. Chapter points are included on the DVD This program was shot using good “prosumer” equipment of the time, but is not up to the clarity of today’s high-definition video. It is however an excellent snapshot of an important time and place in the nation’s railroad history.

The BNSF merger is a couple of years old, but in 1999 Warbonnets and Cascade Green still ruled the Monett and Cherokee Subs. Today, we can look back on these scenes with a sense of nostalgia, knowing that two iconic paint schemes were living on borrowed time. And don’t be concerned about the video quality disclaimers — the footage is surprisingly good, and its historical value is priceless.
