One of the most spectacular portions of BNSF’s transcontinental mainline is Marias Pass. The line climbs through the rugged Rocky Mountains passed some of the most beautiful scenery in the United States. Machines of Iron travels from Whitefish, Montana through the Aspen forests and along the banks of the Flathead River. The weather in Marias Pass is unpredictable and we see it all in this video from bright sunshine to rain to snow. Trestles, tunnels, high ridges, and natural wonders make this video a must for anyone’s collection.

In this program, there are a variety of diesels in Northwestern Montana on not only BNSF, but also other road names like Illinois Central, Amtrak’s Empire Builder, Santa Fe, Burlington Northern with 2 cab-less booster on a 6 unit lash-up, & Conrail.

Locations include Whitefish Yard with a crew change & Great Northern NW3 181 on display at the station parking lot, Corum Bridge, Tunnel 4 on US Highway 2, Nyack junction, Summit with pacing, Midvale Creek Bridge, Browning, Marias Crossing with Little Dog Mountain & Summit Mountain, Glacier Park depot which the empire builder stops between June & September every summer, Grizzly Curve with Glacier National Park, West Bison, Cut Bank, the Izaak Walton Inn at Essex before the new pedestrian bridge was opened in the fall of 2000, East Bison, Medicine Bridge, somewhere between Blacktail & Singleshot, & East Java, that also includes winter action in the snow.

All in all, just like with most MOI titles, NKP 765 Rich Melvin did a fantastic job narrating this program, as it was dedicated to the loss of Sandy Kisselburgh who has a nickname right after one of the spots on Union Pacific’s Sherman Hill route in Wyoming: Dale Junction.

This DVD features some BNSF freight trains running through scenic Marias Pass located in Northern Montana near Glacier National Park. Amtrak’s Empire Builder is also seen since it uses this route on its daily run between Chicago and Seattle.
