I’d give this program 6 stars if I could! It was a spectacular effort just to get #4014 back on the rails, let alone home to Cheyenne! The Steam Crew give great walkthroughs of the engine as it’s readied for its journey. I can’t recommend this video enough!

Trains Magazine filmed the entire Big Boy event from beginning to end on the road to return to steam. The only shame is that you cannot skip the commercials once you put the DVD in. But the show overall was great documentary on the 4014.

The show starts with vintage clips, still images and several clips of the chase as Trains Magazine editor Jim Wrinn narrates the entire program. The Big Boy’s movement was on November 13, 2013. First the temporary track must be installed throughout the parking lot to tow the beast from the museum to the Metrolink mainline. During the work, Jim does an onscreen blog on how the process is doing. A time lapse is used for the moving of the big boy out of the museum. A tour of the locomotive cab is included with engineer Ed Dickens explaining the things inside 4014. The ferry move rolls through West Covina crossing. At 8:29am! Then it is on to West Colton Yard and then to Las Vegas Nevada via Cajon Pass. At Laramie, 4014 is sitting on display as everyone watches the beast that will be coming back to life. Then it’s final battle before arriving in Cheyenne, climbing up Sherman hill. May 8 2014 marks the final day of the big boy’s journey from Pomona to Cheyenne. All to soon the descent of Sherman Hill comes to a close as 4014 finally arrives at its real home: the Cheyenne steam shops! Thankfully, 5 years after this program was made, 4014 finally returned to operational condition this May of this year as it is doubleheading with 844 to Ogden for the 150th anniversary of the golden spike and back to Cheyenne again.

Great documentary on the Big Boy heading back to Cheyenne for restoration. Great background on the history of the locomotive, all of the schematics and planning that took place to get this giant back running. They used the diesel’s air compressor to blow the whistle, and it sounds amazing. Can’t wait to see Big Boy run.
