Union Pacific 4014 has returned to steam and the mainline… after 60 years without being able to turn wheel on rail under its own power! UP brought her back to life to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike This DVD features exclusive historical footage, brand new (May 2019) footage and footage from 4014’s trip from the RailGiants site in California to Cheyenne to be rebuilt by the UP steam shop crew. We’ll see 4014 at all the hot spots, including Echo Canyon and the Wasatch grade. We’ll hear from people who were there. We’ll briefly visit Promontory and see (and hear!) the two replica steam locomotives built for the 100th anniversary Golden Spike celebration! Great pacing action in several locations!

Longtime Pentrex narrator Dave Drui tells us the story behind this amazing event. Of course, we will also see UP’s “Living Legend” 844 as she accompanies 4014 to Ogden. 4014 and 844 doubleheaded the entire way and then we’ll see the two steamers nose-to-nose in Ogden on the day of the anniversary celebration. This DVD and Blu-ray presentation is worthy of the 1.2 million pound, 7,000 horsepower Big Boy!

The Best Largest Steam Engine in The World!!

Very well produced video of Big Boy’s return, great shots and angles! The narration is nice but does not get in the way of the sounds of this steam locomotive. You even get nice videos of the double header with 844. With aging to your collection!

I love these Pentrex videos! Great shots, great narration, and a quality video to watch!

  4. Curtis Watson

Can’t get enough of these two beasts! The added scenes at Promontory were fantastic, too! Big Boy fans, this is a terrific piece to add to your collection!

I thought Trains Magazine had the most complete coverage of #4014’s return to steam… Boy was I wrong! I purchased a copy of THIS, and WOW! There turned out to be SO much more than I expected! Pentrex did a SUPERB job soliciting and compiling footage from a variety of different folks to add to their own footage. This resulted in a very “complete” production! I would expect nothing less from a company like Pentrex, even in the year 2019… PLEASE DO purchase this DVD for you and your family to see what everyone is raving about… Including other reviewers below! 🙂

My mind was completely blown when Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 returns to steam for the first time in over 60 years. I highly recommend this to any steam locomotive enthusiast.

In the Pentrex version of the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 revival, there are several interviews with Trains Magazine editor Jim Wrinn, Amazing animated maps of the Doubleheader route from Cheyenne to Ogden & back, plus some Drone footage from the sky, as well as the southbound test run from Cheyenne to Nunn. Note the single Truck on the left side of the screen as it was revealed that the one car chaser was live-streaming the test run on social media (well, only Instagram). There is also clips from the Union Pacific Big Boy collection from 2001, and Big Boy 4014 update. Plus some other films from WB video productions, and some footage of the 4014 & 844 doubleheader and the nose to nose ceremony on May 9th hosted by the railroad’s president & CEO Lance Fritz was shot by Les Jarrett From Railway Productions, James Parfrey of Steam Train Video, and several folks from AIRAIL images. While this is an incredible look at the Pentrex coverage of the Big Boy 4014 Revival, It doesn’t have any auto-chapters, nor the selected menu pages, ever since the Company moved from Southern California in Pasadena across the country to Indianapolis in the spring of 2017. You’ll have to watch this whole thing like a videotape. Oh and in the previews after the Big Boy revival, there is a trailer for the DVD conversion of the Pentrex version of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Rotary Snowplow OY on the first weekend of May 1991.

In 2013 & 2014, Pentrex captured Big Boy 4014 as it leaves it’s former home at Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in California to be restored in operating condition at Cheyenne, Wyoming steam shop. 5 years later in May 2019, Union Pacific steam team completed the project just in time for the 150th celebration of the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah and I was there to witness it in person. Greatest trip ever in my lifetime. I would’ve given it 5 stars because of Big Boy excursion run but the only reason I gave it 4 stars because there are no chapters or bonus selection menus on it. You have to watch the whole video all in ONE chapter. Still a great video to enjoy and stay tuned for more special trips on Big Boy 4014, because Union Pacific steam program will have the locomotive operating for a long time to come.

The best steam program Pentrex has ever done, and that is saying a lot! The depth of this show makes it special. Maps and interviews and more than I ever expected. I only wish they could have focused more on 844. But I guess with the show already 2 hours long, they ran out of time. Excellent show. NEEDS to be in your steam collection.
