There was a lot of great railroading going on in 1991 – and Pentrex captured 2 hours of highlights for us! In 1991, Pentrex traveled across the country to capture the highlights of the year’s railroading events. The result is two hours of nonstop adventure featuring 8 different railroading subjects, many of these roads are now among railroading’s fallen flags. Included on this DVD are:

SP Beet Train Watch as SP’s famous wooden gondolas are filled to the brim. Then follow two SP GP9s and a Cotton Belt GP40-2 as they haul the gondolas from Los Banos toward Fresno en route to the refinery.
SP Sacramento Shops Wheel repairs, traction motor rebuilds, and heavy locomotive repairs were still taking place at the Sacramento shops in 1991. We’ll take you through the facilities to see the work in progress.
Berea Tower This busy Conrail junction near Cleveland, Ohio, saw a nonstop parade of trains in the fall of 1991. The interesting mix of power includes SD40s, SD40-2, GP40, GP38-2, 6-axle GE locomotives, and more.
Union Pacific Challenger 3985 Our coverage of a special excursion from Salt Lake City/Ogden to McCammon, Idaho includes a cab ride as well as trackside views. No diesel helpers were included on this trip; it’s all steam!
Santa Fe Shippers’ Special Five Santa Fe business cars pulled by GE Warbonnet units made a special run from Fresno to Richmond. Highlights include fast running, a classic SF Depot, and Glen Fraser Tunnel.
Southern Pacific 2472 Join 2472 on her maiden excursion, running from San Francisco to San Jose and return. This was her second outing after 13 years of restoration efforts and the results were a flawless performance!
Railroads of Salt Lake City and Ogden UP, SP, Rio Grande, and the Utah Railway keep the joint double track mainline at Grant Tower humming with activity. It’s not uncommon to see 3-4 trains there at the same time!
Union Pacific Desert Victory Unit 3593 Follow UP’s SD40-2 #3593, painted in camouflage colors and displaying the names of UP employees serving in Operation Desert Storm, as it leads a train from SLC to Yermo.

This DVD features both steam and diesels as they power both freight and passenger trains throughout the US, including UP’s “Desert Victory” unit.

Thought I’d give the “Best of…” videos a try, and I was very glad I did! Lots of great variety! The only footage I’ve found yet of the SP Sacramento Shops in action, awesome steam excursions by 3985 and 2472, and I absolutely loved seeing the Desert Victory unit! I’d say this one is an essential!

Union Pacific 3985 and Southern Pacific 2472 were the only two steam segments in the video. Ogden and Salt Lake City were my other favorites with 3593 pulling a special train. It’s a rare treat.

Pentrex’s “Best Of” 1991, as an earlier person stated. Just have the Desert Victory unit 3593 in it is the best part. Although it was a hard unit to catch in road service because of the amount of events it went to. They were able to catch it out of Salt Lake City. That paint scheme was so awesome. A lot of awesome footage of stuff elsewhere. Stuff at Berea Tower, kind of an early Sunrise/Sunset program in a sense they did there. Seeing the Sacramento shops on SP is really interesting. Seeing UP 3985 and SP 2472 is great. It’s an all around nice program. Makes me want to go back to 1991

Desert Victory 3593…… An excellent paint job and a great tribute by the UP. This clip alone makes the video priceless. The majority of the video is USA west, with only one clip in the east (Berea Tower, Cleveland), so if you love eastern railroads ….. don’t let this discourage you. The Sugar Beet train will also be a highlite with the wooden cars hauling the farm product to the processor. Well done, and worth the price to own the video

While this program features mostly Southern Pacific Action in the west, there is a visit to Conrail’s Berea Tower in Cleveland, and the AT&SF on the Fresno to Richmond excursion. The only 2 Steam Giants in this program was 3985 from Salt Lake City to McCammon Idaho during a layover with 844 on its way to Railfair ’91 in Sacramento, but Surprise Surprise, Greg Scholl was there for his Steam in the West Video. Plus 2472 in the San Fran Bay Area to San Jose on Caltrain Commuter lines. Finally we winessed 3593 leading a freight from Salt Lake City to Yermo. Overall, if you love Southern Pacific Diesels in the modern era before the Union Pacific merger in 1996, this is an experience you don’t want to miss.

This was probably one of my favorites. Seeing the Desert victory unit was good, but seeing the Sugar beat operations took the cake on this video! Shows an operation that will never be repeated. For their age, those wooden SP Beat Gons never looked more attractive!
