We begin with Cotton Belt 819 traveling from Pine Bluff, AR to Tyler, TX with a water stop at Camden. On the way, a Triton Transportation Co. diesel locomotive gives the steam engine a salute with its horn. As the 819 is serviced in Texarkana, classic KCS power crosses the tracks ahead. We then move a bit farther east, where CSX is still running its unique RoadRailer Service. There are Chessie System and B&O units, as well as some classic F-Units leading these trains! On one of them, the final trailer derails and must be left behind. We see some VIA commuter trains in Toronto and Brockville, CP freights around Montreal (including one with a Soo Line unit flying white Extra flags on the point), electric commuter trains out of Montreal, the elegant Quebec Depot, and a still-operating roundhouse in Halifax, where diesels are now serviced. A short but awesome sequence follows Union Pacific 3985, still a coal-burner, pulling an excursion from Cheyenne to Laramie over Track 3. As the Challenger takes coal and water and is greased, we catch a glimpse of the Colorado & Wyoming Railroad’s leased F-Units and passenger cars. C&W operated the Coalmont Branch at this time. We tride an excursion train on the Ferrocarril del Pacifico, with Alcos smoking it up in the yard at Nogales, and vantage points including the top of the caboose and the side catwalks of the locomotive itself! Finally, we see Cumbres & Toltec #488 leading a train from Chama to Windy Point and return.

So the Canada and Mexico segments made this DVD. I had no idea there even was Canadian stuff in here! Don’t get me wrong, the 3985 and C&TS are cool but I feel like they are all shot so much. At least the C&TS was done in the fall. The 819 was nice to see, that whistle tho, ooooof.

I always like the Pentrex “Best Of” videos. They give you the best parts of the DVDs available from that year so you can decide if you want to purchase the full DVD. This one provides two hours of great video from 1988!

This DVD showcases both steam and diesel-powered trains in the United States, Canada and Mexico during 1988, which includes Cotton Belt 819 and Union Pacific 3985 in excursion service.

Just as with Pentrex’s “Best Of 1989”, this Best Of 1988 is definitely a “winner” as well. I was pleasantly surprised at how complete the coverage was of each event… Even the portion in Nogales, Mexico kept my attention and was very interesting as an operation. Cotton Belt 819 was all shined up for her outing to Tyler, Texas and return. Her stack-talk was very much on point as well. Despite her whistle not functioning at full capacity, I think ANY steam fan will still enjoy the variety of shots on and off of 819’s train.
The portion on UP #3985 romping an excursion through Wyoming was probably my favorite segment out of the whole video. The CSX RoadRailer train was another fascinating segment, and I enjoyed every minute of it… A rare treat to witness, indeed. As far as Cumbres & Toltec is concerned, it was cool to see what 1980s operations looked like for them… What locomotives and rolling stock were operational at the time, etc… It was a nice step back into a simpler time.
Overall, I personally believe Best Of 1988 is yet another Pentrex compilation that ANY railfan would enjoy. VARIETY is the “name of the game” once again… There is something here for everyone. 🙂

The only reason I rated this one 4 stars because Mexico in my opinion was not impressive as United States and Canada was. Steam locomotives #819 & 3985 were my personal favorites, but CSX and Eastern Canada have some memorable moments too. The final segment was a visit to the Cumbres & Toltec scenic railroad in October. It’s a great one to watch

My wife & I watched this together and we were both really impressed. Mexico was likely her favorite clip. Mine…. the CSX units pulling the roadrailer. This is stuff we don’t see today, or can’t see today do to distance from home. We loved the video and plan to purchase the full videos if we can in the future.

The first 27 minutes feature 819 from pine bluff to Tyler and back In november despite the broken whistle. Next comes the early CSX roadrailer trains with a mix of chessie system and B&O units on the first day, and f units 116-119 the next day. Not only it was popular for rail fans in the 80s it was unusual that Greg Scholl shot the f-units in that time period. This segment ran for 10 minutes. At the 36-37 minute mark, we head north to Canada for lots of unique diesels on both freight and passenger operations in August as they roll in and out of downtown Toronto, Brockville with the last semaphore signal at the station, some CP freights at Pointe-claire, with the first one hauling a dead doodlebug in the consist, the second with SOO line, and a GO commuter in pushing mode with f-7 1304, and many more locations as well. Not to mention the short lived interurban coaches at portal heights. This segment was also long in this pentrex program. At the 64 minute mark, Union pacific challenger 3985 operated an excursion from Cheyenne to Laramie over Sherman hill. Keeping mind that this was way before 3985 converted to number 5 oil. At Laramie, we see the f-units on the short-lived Wyoming and Colorado railroad.12 minutes later at the 76 minute mark, we head south of the border to view more foreign diesels complete with a ride on board. Finally at the 95 minute mark we are back home for more steam action on the Cumbres & Toltec with engine 488 operating on the last day of the railroad’s 88 season. Eventually the engine never wore a pilot snowplow.

This is at a time when Pentrex was at the height of their game. I don’t necessarily care much about the specific areas or railroads in this one, but the professional armature style of the chases or rides was awesome.

The quality of this video is super for the cameras they had back in 1988, but they have been updated when it was redone to DVD. The 819 footage to Tyler TX was super and very complete on that trip. The 819 has not run since 1993. Loved the 3985 footage also. The Cumbree & Toltec footage is great, & very interesting. The diesel “dismals” footage is good also, but I only rated the video 4 stars because of my personal preference, I like steam. Any how if I did not already have it, or if I lost my copy, I would buy it again.
