  1. Mwdonoughue

This program starts off with the history of the B&LE, before we watch the railroads orange diesels hauling loads of iron ore throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio.

  2. Curtis Watson

I love to watch railroads like this at work. Just raw power, moving massive amounts of cargo, guided by people who know what they’re doing. From the history of the B&LE to “modern” operations, this is a great addition to anyone’s collection.

Originally released as the second volume of the Berkshire Productions Contemporary Railroading series from 1990/1991, this program features a lot of diesels from onboard the train (Both locomotive cabs & Cabooses) to great trackside action from the mainline to the yards which still features a working turntable from the steam years. A music video in the opening credits is also shown as well as the history of the B&LE by using still images from the years of steam. Did you Know that the B&LE was created in 1869, the same year where the first Transcontinental Railroad was formed?

In Steam days, the B&LE owns 279 iron horses, especially a unique 4-4-0 number 2/200: the Merry Widow. Steam on the B&LE in regular service last ran in Early June of 1954. Today 154 (Not the Southern 1890 built 2-8-0 in Knoxville) is at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, 604/304 is at Greenville, & 643 is at the Age of Steam Roundhouse.

Locations on this Northwestern Pennsylvania & Northeastern Ohio Freight only railroad which the mainline is 144 miles long includes: North Bessemer with Union Railroad signs on the front of the sheds, Butler, the Albion Mill Branch, Wallace Junction, the Hillards Branch, The Western Allegheny division, Dewey, Quain Junction, Shenango, Unity Junction, Greenville Shops, Conneaut on Lake Erie, Conneaut Creek, Conneautville, KO Junction (short for Kremis-Osgood), Osgood Viaduct, DuCane Dispatcher tower with an interview & a tour from Mr. Richard Stanley, Bessemer Yard, East Oakmont, Saxonberg, Branchton Yard, Grove City, Blueville Junction, Kremis, Harrisville, & the Allegheny river bridge.

A Cab Ride on SD38-2 number 867 to North Bessemer Yard is included as well as SD18 number 853 on the opposite bound return trip.
