“Baldwin Diesels” is a 2 show combo: “Early Baldwin Diesels on the Southern Pacific” and “California’s Baldwin Diesels”. See action on the SP, Trona, Amador Central and the Sierra Railroad. We begin with the Early Diesels: The Early 1950’s were good years for the Baldwin Locomotive Works and the Southern Pacific. Both companies were at their zenith, and SP was replacing its steam fleet with diesels – including a variety of Baldwins – which kept Baldwin busy producing the new locomotives. The SP purchased switchers, AS-616 and DRS-6-6-1500/1 units – and all will be seen here.

We follow that up with some of the last Baldwin diesels to run. In the 1990s, first-generation diesels that remain in operation are a diminishing group. In an effort to preserve the memory of these unique machines, this program captures these Baldwin diesel locomotives on three different California shortline railroads – Trona, Amador Central and the Sierra Railroads. Included in this bunch is the rare 6-axle AS-616 – we see them as they work their finals days with heavy loads.

In the California’s Baldwin diesels portion of the combo from 1993, there are 3 short lines to visit during the spring of that year: the final runs of the AS-616s on the trona railway in the Mojave desert which surprisingly enough, Greg Scholl was visiting there in 1991 for early diesels 2, a short segment on the amador central with an S-12, & even a visit to the railroad that is nicknamed: the Hollywood railroad-the Sierra railway near rail town 1897 in Jamestown as another S-12 is making its final runs before it was officially out of service for good.

In the early Baldwin diesels on the SP portion of the combo from 1996 which is one of the shortest pentrex titles to ever be released, there are not only a variety of AS-616s, an S-12, & the DRS-6-6-1500/1, but also several scenes of steam locomotives being stored from small switchers to cab forwards as well as a shay in operation. There are also a ton of semaphore signals on the mainlines especially a segment where we witnessed an aftermath of the Napa river bridge after all 3 diesels took the plunge.

With Dave drui’s informative narration, this is a great look at these early diesels operating in the western region of America especially in California from 1949 to 1993.
