A lush autumn journey on #765 Nickel Plate Berkshire through the Great Gorge of the New River in West Virginia. All #765! – in two crisply filmed excursions through the rich foliage, some 1000 feet below the farms of Fayette County, where much of the gorge is accessible only by rail. The intertwined history of coal and steam played out along these tracks.

Part 1 takes us from Huntington to Sulfur Springs, passing through Thurmond, home of the Dunglen Hotel where, in the early 1900s, coal barons and gamblers played a poker game rumored to have lasted for 13 years. In Part 2, #765 thunders from Huntington to Hinton, WV on a foliage tour with the local Huntington chapter of the NRHS.

In the Sunday River Version of 765’s very first excursion through the New River Gorge in October of 1985, the 1944 Lima Ohio Built Berkshire operates between Huntington & Hinton West Virginia at locations like Sandstone Falls, Cincinnati Ohio with assistance from Chessie System 7701, St. Albans, Hawk’s Nest Overlook near the New River Dam, Thurmond (which was shown in the 1987 movie Matewan with James Earl Jones & Bob Gunton), Prince while entering & exiting Stretcher’s Neck Tunnel, & MD Cabin at Quinnimont. Plus, there is also the John Henry Tunnel east of Hinton, Alderson Depot, Roncaverte Yard, White Sulphur Springs Station with a special party going on, the State Capitol of Charleston, Montgomery, Kanawa Falls, the 1,700 ft. New River Bridge, & several other spots like the bridge under the Virginian Railway for example.

Other Producers Like Diverging Clear, Lasting Impressions, & Future Famous America By Rail Co-Creator Greg Scholl was also there for the Berkshire’s first trips, on this former Chesapeake & Ohio Mainline which is owned by CSX.

The sound films were recorded by David Corbitt. And Aside from the Trackside scenes, there is also onboard footage as well as some pacing scenes, not to mention freight trains on the Chessie System shortly before it was merged with Seaboard to create today’s CSX, as well as Amtrak’s Cardinal.

The look of this vintage film of 765 from Huntington to Hinton, West Virginia on the point of the New River Train is probably the best part about this DVD… Almost 40 minutes of escape to another place in time that we all want to remember and savor. 🙂
