The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad operates 64 miles of 3-Foot narrow gauge trackage from Chama, New Mexico to Antonito, Colorado in some of the best scenery the American West has to offer. The focus of our show is a 4 day charter by a group from the UK, and several photo freights were operated. We enjoy seeing class K-27 2-8-2 number 463 running solo on a short tank car train, and a replica of the old San Juan passenger train, and working in a double-headed freight train. Besides 463, we also enjoy K-37 number 497 on some of the specials as well as in regular passenger train service. This engine (497) has not operated for over 15 years.

Most of the focus is on the Chama to Cumbres section and into the Los Pinos Valley. We see classic shots at Tanglefoot curve, Los Pinos, Cumbres, and the entire Chama Valley between Cumbres and Chama. We also see a freight heading up the hill with a mid-train helper, and regular passenger trains that are double-headed. Also shown are the K-36 class 2-8-2’s which are the dominant class of engines on this former Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. The engines for the charter trains are all lettered Rio Grande just like the D&RGW days!

  1. Mwdonoughue

This visit to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad features many different classes of narrow gauge Mikado’s on both freight and passenger trains, which includes K-27 #463 and K-37 #497 (now out of service).

In Volume 3 of the Steam Around the World Collection, Randy Scholl made an October 1995 visit to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic railroad for a weekend of freight specials that are organized by David Rogers of Steam Loco Safari Tours.

    Here’s the timeline:

Day 1. 463 pulling 6 tank cars with a caboose to Chama in the morning, & later in the day, 489 & 484 doubleheads to Antonito on a regular passenger train while 463 & 497 led a Doubleheaded freight special to Cumbres while following the 1925 built mikados behind.

Day 2. 463 leading a recreation of the San Juan Express on a small stretch of track west of Chama & also heading to Osier on a freight with 489 pushing in the middle until it got removed at Cumbres. Meanwhile, 497 & 487 are doubleheading a passenger train to Cumbres while following the freight special. Later 463 & 484 are meeting at Los Pinos while facing west.

Day 3. 489 on a freight train to Antonito, which includes multiple runbys at Lobato trestle over wolf creek. Later in the day, 463 & 497 are doubleheading once again, this time it’s a passenger train to Cumbres. In the late afternoon, 489 heads west about 5 miles away from Antonito. At the end of the program during the closing credits, 497 departs Antonito on the 4th day.

This is one of the few titles in this series to be narrated by Mike Leland.
