“Out on the Island” – To New Yorkers, that means “Long Island.” And, unless you want to be stuck in heavy, slow traffic, getting there means riding the Long Island Rail Road. That means riding one of the LIRR’s ubiquitous multiple unit trains, perhaps transferring at Jamaica to a diesel powered train.

In the sixties, that would have been an ALCO diesel powered train. Ride MP-54, MP-70, MP-72 and M-1 MU’s and behind ALCO C420’s, RS-3’s, RS-1’s and F-M C-Liner’s. Come see the best of “The Route of the Dashing Commuter.”
Mitchell Bugg –
For those too young, here is a chance to enjoy what was. The Long Island was unique among America’s railroads in that it was all about the commuter. At times the LIRR is an above ground extension of the NY subway system. In other respects it becomes a bucolic backwoods or, country branchline. Along with the Alcos, are a few FMs and a 2-8-0. A real eye ppper is the cast-off passenger equipment from the Pennsy, New Haven, Florida East Coast, Seaboard Coast line and Kansas City Southern, as well as LIRRs own fleet of MUs ranging from PRR designed MP-54s, unique double-deckers and the then-new M-1s. This video is money well spent.

Here is an Alco lover’s dream video. So much to see and a really location to see them. Long Island has a lot to offer for trains. Commuter trains are essential for the region with a high population, and the Alco’s put on a wonderful show. I was very impressed with this video.
