The Laurinburg & Southern RR was chartered in the early 20th century in North Carolina. It runs from Laurinburg to Johns and from Laurinburg to Raeford in the north. Interchange is with CSX on the former Seaboard Air Line in Laurinburg and the Aberdeen and Rockfish at Raeford. It is a busy line with two major customers. One is a large plate glass industry and the other is an elevator providing feed for the turkey and hog business in the area. They operated with three EMD switchers, including two SW-1’s. Chester Kamuda videotaped the operation and got cab rides. The little road had seemingly too many car loads and not enough track! Maps and narration.

“A Day on the Laurinburg & Southern” is a revealing look inside the operations of a modern, diesel powered southern shortline. Videography from both inside the cab and on the ground is excellent. The sound, which is half the video experience for me is destroyed by the whirring and clacking of the shutter of someone’s still camera. If the photographer wants to shoot video, a still photographer should not be within 100 feet of the video camera. Do one or the other, do NOT try to combine the two because the rapid fire clacking of the still camera is extremely aggravating. If I had known about this flaw, I would have never bought the video. Otherwise, this would be a five star production.
