Get ready to experience one of railroading’s great trips – across Donner Pass! Climb aboard a Union Pacific EMD SD60 hauling an expedited MRVRO freight manifest heading east from Roseville Yard to Roper Utah. Just sit back and enjoy the ride! Heading up the 2.5% grades of the Sierras, three separate cameras are used to produce this 240 minute railroad action exclusive. Two cameras are strategically placed on the lead unit #6356 and bring you Donner Rail’s exclusive Live Train Cam experience. Camera Number One is mounted on the front porch and captures all the forward action as our train rolls East. Camera Number Two is aimed down the long hood of our lead unit at 2nd and 3rd units, gives you all the live diesel action while an on-board roaming camera captures all the hard-to-imagine beauty of the Overland Route through the Sierras. Enjoy these panoramic vistas with full stereo sound! Listen and feel the deep throaty sounds of diesel engines, traction motors, and dynamic brakes working hard up and down steep grades. Hear the clickety-clack of rail joints and the squeal of steel wheels moving through every curve. Watch for on-screen titles that give you information on mileposts, and all the steep grade locations, track speeds, towns and train stops, track crossovers, historical sites and more.
All footage produced with broadcast-quality cameras and editing equipment. “Cab Ride” footage was shot with serious rail fans and model railroaders in mind for dramatic views of Donner’s scenery, terrain and historical sites. This DVD gives you four solid hours of live rail action! Located in historic Roseville, California, Donner Rails videos are produced by professional railroad story writers and videographers collaborating to bring you the real deal. Donner Rails gives viewers the best seat in the house as we journey by rail, both steam and diesel, over the Sierra Nevadas!

The entire eastbound trip from Roseville California to Reno Nevada while going to roper Utah, is led by Union Pacific SD60M number 6352 on a manifest freight train.
Along the way, there are milepost markers rolling through towns, mounted cameras with extra power from sister engine 6184 & since been sold C40-8 number 9143, as well as historic facts about one of the most challenging landmarks of western American railroading when it was once the central pacific during the building of the transcontinental railroad in the 1860s, before it was owned by Southern Pacific, until that fallen flag was purchased by UP in 1996.

This one’s a near miss – it’s so nearly a great cab ride, but the editing leaves something to be desired. There’s far too much use of the rearward view on full screen which is pretty much like a still shot of the following units and the first few cars with some distant scenery moving in the background. It’s really aggravating when they cut to that shot as we approach a classic location like Cape Horn or miss many of the summit-area tunnels and rock work. They should have used the inset screen technique. That said, some excellent in-cab footage regardless – well worth a look.

Watching this DVD was like watching dirt grow, what happened to the CAB Ride, Saw some interesting information onscreen but that’s all. No narration.

Some may think of a cab ride as boring. I found it very interesting! The ride goes through some very beautiful and scenic part of the country. The sounds of the diesel engines and the squeal of the rails makes it ideal for a background noise for my model railroad. Worth the price!
