Description

After a year rebuilding, and 20 years as a static museum display, N&W 611 stormed back into steam, and the public’s mind, in 2015. Crowds turned out to watch the J Class 4-8-4 as she took up the Queen of Steam mantle once again. Built by the N&W in Roanoke, the J Class was destined for greatness. In this program, we’ll see 611 and several of her sisters in 1950s historical footage. We’ll see 611 pulling the Powhatan Arrow. We’ll see her on her side and look at the wreck that probably saved her for later generation to marvel at and ride behind. And we’ll see 611 on excursion duty in 2015. This is a look at 70 years of N&W 611 history.

This program is licensed by the Virginia Museum of Transportation, owner of the 611. A portion of sales will be paid as a royalty to VMT and will go directly into the 611 Endowment Fund. Your purchase helps keep the 611 in steam!

  2. 3 out of 5 one big mistake

they thought that 611 was retired in 1993, but its wrong. In 1994 611 doubleheaded with Frisco 1522 to Atlanta.

  3. 5 out of 5 Nice picture AND sound

In some ways the sounds of 611 are better than what we see! The whistle coming through Mananas is wonderful and the chuff, chuff when she is working the grade at Shawsville is fantastic. I really appreciated the look back at 611 in the 1950s when she was on both regular passenger and freight duty. So many DVDs don’t feature any history- even when it is a historical locomotive like N&W 611.

  4. 5 out of 5 This program povides a great comparison of 611 in her three careers.

We see scenes from 611’s three careers in service. The overwhelming emphasis is on her excursions from 2015. There’s a couple of scenes from the 80’s/90’s and a lot of historic clips from her career on the Norfolk & Western in the 50’s a number in color. I was surprised to see color footage of the aftermath of the derailment that perhaps saved the 611 with her tender just in the river. I think it’s interesting to see a comparison study in the life of a historic steam locomotive!
