In the fall of 2013, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad operated a series of special freight trains with not only 2-8-0 number 315 built in 1895 as number 425, but also K-27 class 2-8-2 number 463 built in 1903, as well as the K-36 class 2-8-2 Mikados: 487, 484, 489, & 488 built in 1925.

Day 1 of the freight special covered the Double-Header, Mid-Train helper service, & Solo Runs with 315 & 463 that has 3 cabooses behind the cars with a cameo from Rio Grande Southern Galloping Goose Motor Car number 5 at Chama, & a Go-Pro Cab Ride with a go-pro camera from under the second tank car behind 463.

Day 2 captures both engines at the halfway point of Osier as dawn rises, then there are Caboose Rides behind 463, as well as a busy meet & hear the horn from Galloping Goose 5, not to mention 463 pushing in the middle once again, as well as Go-Pro cab rides on 463 from both the top of the driver’s side, & underneath the fireman’s side while pushing 315’s cattle cars.

Day 3 finds 315 & 463 getting preparations at Antonito in the morning with 489 & 488 before going back west to Chama.

More cab rides on the 2-8-0 from the 2013 special was released on the un-narrated “315 Cab Ride”.

In the closing credits, Jim Parfrey of Steam Train Videos, provided the extra footage, while the Go-Pro angles were filmed by Jon Kling.

Great footage of how Rio Grande trains looked when there was more traffic than was just needed for the K-28’s, K-36’s, and K-37’s. At one point Consolidations and Mudhens handled the trains and this is a great insight into what that was like.

    A great video.

The scenery is so magnificent that, if you have Blu-ray, this is a program that serves that higher definition. The trains are marvelous too! Seeing the narrow gauge climb the mountain and then head toward us over a high trestle is a treat.
