Cajon Pass in 1987 is a very different place than it is now. In many ways more exciting for railfans, with helpers, cabooses and pre-merger railroads.

These three features, two main films, on the ICTF and West Colton Yard, and the bonus cab ride, give us an insider’s view of the Southern Pacific.

Southern Pacific’s Daylight 4449 has been called the most beautiful steam locomotive in operation, drawing crowds of admirers whenever the colorful, magnificent 4-8-4 runs in excursion service. In October 1995, after a three year hiatus, 4449 once again thrilled as it steamed through Fall colors in Oregon.

Pre-merger, all Southern Pacific action: On the Belt Railway of Chicago, Illinois Central and the SPCSL between Joliet and St. Louis.

“Baldwin Diesels” is a 2 show combo: “Early Baldwin Diesels on the Southern Pacific” and “California’s Baldwin Diesels”. See action on the SP, Trona, Amador Central and the Sierra Railroad. All Baldwins!

Union Pacific on the former Southern Pacific’s Sunset Route. So short a time after the merger means plenty of Southern Pacific power is still seen.

Two programs on one disc! Both feature the layout and modeling of Bob Calvert. First we’ll see the layout, then we’ll see the collection and get some detailing tips.

One of the greatest engineering feats in railroading history. This program captures a classic moment. Cabooses were making their final appearances. The SF & SP were counting their chickens before they hatched with the “Kodachrome” merger paint scheme.

Tehachapi prior to the mergers. 3 1/2 hours!

Tehachapi Pass before the Mergers of the 1990s.

It’s 1947 and you’re behind triple-headed Santa Fe steam over Raton Pass!

The Santa Fe Railway is the main star in this compilation of 8 & 16mm home color movie film of steam and diesel action from the 1940s & 50s. You’ll see lots of warbonnet F-units, as many as six at a time, powering famous passenger trains.

Exciting action from the 1970s on two of the most well known, and busiest, western railfan locations! Second generation diesel action at San Bernardino, Bakersfield, Tehachapi Loop and Cajon Summit.

The Herington Sub has a long history: Rock Island, Cotton Belt/Southern Pacific and now Union Pacific. But, in 1993 the line between Kansas City and Herington, Kansas was solid Southern Pacific territory.

This is a rare mileage cab ride! Join us in 1994 for a trip around the Kansas City Terminal Railway. Our ride is a CNW SD-18 and from that perch we hit all the highlights and see quite a few trains pass by as we travel the KCT.

Well it’s gone. 1997 really was the last winter for Southern Pacific’s Tennessee Pass and what a pity it had to close.

Ride on board KCOAT, a 5600 foot autorack train with clean SP power, on a sunny December day, over Colorado’s Tennessee Pass, from Pueblo to Minturn.

This is now Union Pacific country – but in 1996, it was the home to mostly older Southern Pacific diesels and ancient semaphores.

This is the Southern Pacific on the Sunset Route, from Steins on the New Mexico border to Maricopa, Arizona.

Tehachapi before the big mergers! From December 1995, see Southern Pacific and Santa Fe units running over the loop.

The SP lives! At least in the hearts of its fans, and here on this Highball Productions DVD.
