This is perhaps the final look at one of the most incredible railroad lines in the United States. On August 23, 1997 Union Pacific ran the last through train over this former Rio Grande main line, possibly the end of “the big show” of railroading on this historic Colorado route. Fortunately, the cameras were there when the railroad was still running full tilt. See everything from the manifest to coal and taconite trains. Lots of mainline diesel action! Minturn was still a busy place with helpers being cut in and out. See the entire line threatened with closure, from Dotsero to Canon City.See the depths of Eagle River Canyon, the 3% climb to Tennessee Pass (and a train with 10 locomotives), Colorado’s highest peaks, the Arkansas River Canyon, and the Royal Gorge. This spectacular railroad may now be silent, but the trains still roar on your TV! Chapter Menu provides instant access to program segments.

Tennessee Pass was once a great railroad feat. We witness the final days before abandonment of heavy trains working hard to get over the line and it is awesome. A great tribute to a line that was so famous

The Tennessee Pass and Royal Gorge Route is an amazing sight to watch with helper locomotives on heavy coal through the gorge and Southern pacific diesel locomotives hard at work.

Great video, it almost feels like it could be part of the America by Rail series.

This 1997 Video Produced by 2 “America By Rail” Photographers, Greg Scholl & Les Jarrett, Features lots of Freight action on the final days of mainline freights with Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, & Rio Grande. Today The Tennessee Pass Mainline is gone forever, but the Canon City line is still operational as a tourist line With Preserved Rio Grande F-units. One Thing that I wish to improve the video itself, is that we need more of Michael Lynch’s Music. It’s Beautiful, its good, and its a somewhat basic America By Rail Format.
