The Newfoundland Railway was the longest narrow gauge railroad in North America. The railroad was isolated on the island. Traffic came in from Sydney, NS, via ferry boat. Standard gauge cars had their trucks replaced with 3 1/2 foot gauge trucks for the run across the island. Power in the later years came in the form of EMD GR-12’s, which were essentially GP-9’s with six axle trucks. Covered is the ferry ride into Port aux Basque and we follow various trains eastward to St. Johns. All color, maps and narration.

History here. A railroad that no longer exists. Shut down in favor of highway trucks. A rail line that operated on an island (be it a large island), connecting to mainland Canada by ferry. Narrow gauge with EMD power in the final years. It’s a part of our Canadian history in a region many will never see do to it’s location. The videographer has done a superb job covering the closing hours before parent company CNR terminated operations. The narration is well done covering the history of the line from the early years in the 1880’s to the closing. A great video that is highly recommended.
