Visit Kansas City and surrounding areas, before all the great mergers of the 90s. See trains from many different roads, with detailed maps and narration on how trains moved through the KC area. Visit Santa Fe Junction, Airline Junction and the “Highline Bridge”. View run down industrial backdrops with trains moving thru “the West Bottoms”. Many transfers and locals are shown from Santa Fe, Gateway Western, Soo, UP and KCS! There is also plenty of beautiful countryside settings, and fast running outside of the city, with trains moving at full track speed with multiple engines wide open! See a variety of motive power, that is long gone from mainline service today, including early GE’s and EMD locomotives. We show many scenes before the 1996 formal merger, and then contrast scenes shot in 2000 to show the many changes. Watch the newer units taking over, many being the very last orders of engines and models, from these fallen flag railroads.

Fine examples of CNW AC-4400 Operation Lifesaver Units, SP/SSW GP-60s/SD-45, and sparkling clean varieties of Santa Fe painted Warbonnets. These include Dash-8-40B, and C-44-9 models, Cowl SDP-45s, SD-70s and standard and cabless GP-60s. Rarer blue and yellow painted SD-39, GP-40X, GP-50 and GP-9U and GP-7U models are also highlighted. Norfolk Southern’s ex Wabash Route is explained and many trains show up from them in this movie. Union Pacific and Burlington Northern also both make their presence felt, with fine examples of big power on heavy coal and drag freights! The route of the Kansas City Southern is mapped out, and we see some road freights and locals from them as well!

Railfanning Kansas City is always fascinating; step back in time to see KC during one of the most exciting eras in modern railroading and add Charles Smiley’s “documentary” flair, and you’ve got a “must have” video! A variety of locomotive types and paint schemes, a “Who’s Who” of fallen flags, urban settings with character, trains running at speed through open countryside, interesting consists, and some nice before-and-after views from a time when American railroading was undergoing significant changes. Nearly two hours of great video, nostalgia and pure railfanning fun!

Great movie of the Kansas city area! Nothing like seeing old vintage power from the late 90’s and seeing pre and post mergers of railroads in the Kansas City area. Enjoyed the locations to see how much has changed and being in Kansas city now and able to see what it used to look like back in 1996 and early 2000’s was a great way to see how much this town has changed and seeing all the old railroad crossing. In this dvd you will see a lot of old wig-wags still in use!

First, of all I LOVE KANSAS CITY as a railfan hotspot, so I was intrigued by this DVD. Second, I also LOVE the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific so I HAD TO HAVE this DVD!!! I am a fan of Charles Smiley videos and this one does not disappoint! I love the classic pre-BNSF Santa Fe coverage as well as the classic pre-UP Southern Pacific coverage. I enjoyed a last look at how KC was during the 1990s when you could still see the CNW, SOO/CP, BN, ATSF, and SP before almost everything because BNSF and UP. I do like the “then” vs. “now” shots as well, although they make me long for how things use to be more than they make me appreciate how they are now.
