Step into the countryside of China and see a big show of mainline steam. This was the world’s last stronghold of steam locomotives. You will see a little of everything that you might expect from a country that was building steam engines only a few years ago, and was still operating thousands of steam engines on a daily basis. We take you to Northeast China where we see plenty of doubleheaders, and even some trains with rear pushers.

Most are the QJ 2-10-2’s on a variety of freight and passenger runs. Also see RM Class 4-6-2’s and the SL Class 4-6-2’s in passenger service. There are also several meets where two trains are seen in the same shot. Shot in 1989, before the big crows started to arrive – and while the older SL 4-6-2’s (with their distinctive exhaust sound) were still activer. We visit the Changchun area, Jilin Province, the Nancha region, and much more. The QJ class 2-10-2’s are the most widely seen, in both freight and passenger service. Shot in the cold of winter, we get great steam effects!

In this 5th & final volume of the Steam Around the World Collection, Greg’s Brother Randy Scholl Traveled all across the globe to witness everyday steam operations in China during the Winter of 1989.

Some of these scenes were later used in one of Greg’s newest shows from last year known as QJ 6988 in Iowa.

On one scene for a little more or less than 10 minutes, the camera keeps rolling as QJ 2-10-2 number 7085 is almost stranded on top of a hill while hauling some freight, as well as various wheel-slips.

Locations include Changchun, Jilin, Nancha near the Russia border, Zuojia, Tumenling, the bridges of Tumen with Bridge 5 & tunnel, & Langxiang, with a horseshoe curve near the end of the program.

Aside from Randy’s footages of the SL class Pacifics built between 1916 & 1956, as well as the RM Class 4-6-2s built between 1958 & 1966, & even the QJ Class 2-10-2s built between 1956 & 1988, with a JS Class 2-8-2 on a Doubleheader with a QJ, this is one of the few titles in the series to be narrated by Mike Leland which he also narrated German Standard Gauge during February of 1994, & American Steam in the Rockies on the Cumbres & Toltec in October of 1995, while the regular GSVP narrator the late John Edward Hingsbergen worked on German Narrow Gauge during 1992 & Cuba Stronghold of American Steam from early 1996 even though Leland narrated the previews for the series.

This program primarily features SL and RM class 4-6-2’s in passenger service, along with QJ class 2-10-2’s in both freight and passenger service, but it also includes a JS class 2-8-2 leading one freight. This was filmed before the SL and RM Pacific’s were retired, and 6 years before the QJ’s gained their new stomping grounds on the legendary Jing Peng Pass.
