Norfolk Southern Chicago Line, Part 2, Elkhart to Toledo

No other mainline into Chicago from the east boasts as much rail traffic or variety as that of Norfolk Southern’s Chicago Line. This high-density double track mainline sees a great deal of moves everyday, from unit oil and ethanol moves to hot intermodals to general freights and everything in between. In this volume, we cover both freight and passenger trains from Elkhart, Indiana to Toledo, Ohio.

Pooled power is plentiful, and you’ll see examples of this from roads like Union Pacific, Canadian National and BNSF. Haulage moves from Canadian Pacific also make appearances. Norfolk Southern’s Heritage Power also finds its way into the production, and we’ll see several of them on our journey, including the Conrail, Central of Georgia, Penn Central, Southern and many others.

Shot in all seasons of the year, traffic will be seen in all kinds of conditions, from warm summer days to the cold, blowing winter snow squalls typical for this region of the Midwest. Endangered signals and code line dating back to predecessor New York Central form great backdrops for trains, at a time when NS is just starting to renew a lot of the lineside signal hardware on the system.

From the classic Indiana and Ohio small towns and through the beautiful country settings with many miles of old code line still in place, these locations all combine to typify what this busy line is all about.
