Chicago & Northwestern personality and color are still abundant on this high traffic former CNW, now Union Pacific route west out of Chicago. We’ll see a wide variety of trains and motive power from GP-7s to the new SD-90MACs… and even Union Pacific 4-8-4 Northern-type steamer #844 in excursion service at several locations. Most power (not #844!) is still in CNW colors.
Locations include Fox River crossing at Geneva, JB Tower and the EJ&E diamonds in Chicago, Elmhurst, Lombard, Wheaton and a perimeter view of Proviso Yard. Volume 2 covers the former CNW Geneva Sub west of Geneva.
This is vintage nineties footage, shot using nineties equipment. It is not as sharp as programs shot today. Still, these are interesting scenes, many not covered elsewhere, and the narration is informative and top notch.
Lloyd –
Around the time of the UP take-over of the C&NW, the western Chicago district was seeing a lot of action of the railroad with both UP & C&NW power units. The producer has done a fine job covering the district and showing the trains hard at work. Included is the UP 844 for the steam train fans, and some Metra action for the urban rail fans. The only thing is…. the quality is not the best as the colours have faded over the years, but don’t let that be a discourage.
